Ranged DPS Mentalist

I have a lv31 character who was a psychic character that I converted into a power armor character like two of my lv 40s. However, I figured I have too many characters of this type and wanted to go back to psychic powers, because they have the potential to be fun to play. The problem is, I have no idea where to start.

This is the build that I have so far. I want to optimize this build so that the damage output potential is maximized. But I also want to stay incredibly faithful to the ranged psychic DPS concept I have going. I won't take any melee powers for this build, but you guys can tweak the build as you see fit. The more devastating the power combinations, the better. I want to see the highest numbers possible when facing even the Rampage Alerts when I hit Lv 40.

Ego Blast Rank2 with Mind Opener, Mental Storm Rank 3, Telepathic Reverberation (just use talents for PRE) is the highest DPS combo in this frameset. Take 2 Active Offenses, heals and an AoE and you're pretty good.

Just note that TR doesn't work past 50 ft and sometimes will bug out if too many FX appear. Using low FX settings in crowded situations like Rampage helps.

DEX/CON/INT or STR/CON/INT for more sturdiness works well.

Have you considered using the Seraphim passive?

I've used it the past running with a ranged TK toon. That type of setup was almost too easy to use. Tons of energy and lots of damage.

This type of build is explained really by l1ghtstar here ==>http://co-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=148402

Very surprising damage and survival and much better than Ego Form for a ranged TK'r IMHO>

Here's a template I was using for (mostly) Telepathy dps; can alter it how ya see fit:

    PowerHouse (Link to this build)

    Archetype: Freeform

    Super Stats:
    Level 6: Presence (Primary)
    Level 10: Constitution (Secondary)
    Level 15: Intelligence (Secondary)

    Talents:
    Level 1: The Invincible
    Level 6: Healthy Mind
    Level 9: Shrug It Off
    Level 12: Diplomatic
    Level 15: Quick Recovery
    Level 18: Negotiator
    Level 21: Lasting Impression

    Powers:
    Level 1: Psi Lash
Level 1: Ego Blast (Rank 2, Mind Opener)
    Level 6: Telepathic Reverberation
Level 8: Ego Form (Rank 2, Rank 3)
    Level 11: Concentration
    Level 14: Conviction (Rank 2, Rank 3)
Level 17: Ego Sleep (Plagued by Nightmares)
Level 20: Mental Storm (Rank 2, Rank 3)
Level 23: Telekinetic Maelstrom (Rank 2, Rank 3)
    Level 26: Palliate (Absolve)
Level 29: Ego Surge (Rank 2, Nimble Mind)
    Level 32:
    Level 35:
    Level 38:

    Travel Powers:
Level 6: Mystic Flight (Rank 2, Rank 3)
    Level 35: Distortion Superspeed

    Specializations:
    Presence: Repurpose (3/3)
    Presence: Selfless Ally (2/2)
    Presence: Moment of Glory (3/3)
    Presence: Vulnerability (2/2)
    Sentinel: Torment (2/2)
    Sentinel: Sentinel Aura (3/3)
    Sentinel: Moment of Need (3/3)
    Sentinel: Wither (2/2)
    Guardian: Fortified Gear (3/3)
    Guardian: Ruthless (2/2)
    Guardian: Find the Mark (2/3)
    Guardian: The Best Defense (3/3)
    Mastery: Sentinel Mastery (1/1)

Pres PSS w/ Vulnerability is actually quite good for this; add Wither and ya boost group dmg by a good deal (as well as ur own). Ya can roll both debuffs w/ Mental Storm and Ego Sleep.

It also means ur bonus healing is quite strong, so self-heals add even more survivability than they normally do.

TK Maelstrom was added just to take adv of the stun and to have some burst AoE. It could be replaced w/ a diff mentalist AoE like TK Eruption, Ego Storm, Sprites, etc.

Gearing for this version is mostly for Int and Con, w/ some crit rating on the side.

    Thank you for these recommendations.

Seraphim has proven extremely effective in boosting my mentalist's DPS and healing capabilities.

I especially like the Gem Star build. The only gripe I can possibly think of is the energy boost at the cost of damage when it goes into support role(Which ultimately does little to hinder the overall evectiveness). Other than that, I am extremely happy with it.

I respec'd my mentalist about a year ago and forgot where to begin with powers. This character is lv 40, btw.

Edit: I can't find the Gem Star build that was linked here years ago. If I could find it, I'd use it as a starting point.

Eh, you prob could have made a new thread instead of necro-ing a really old one, but w/e.

I'm not sure what sort of things you still want to do w/ the character. Regardless, TP isn't a great set for personal dps, though its still good for debuffs, CC, and in general helping allies perform better. Here's an example of a general dps TP build that's nice for groups:

    Overseer: Trapped (3/3)
    Overseer: Conservation (1/2)
    Mastery: Sentinel Mastery (1/1)

Sleep and MStorm can help roll debuffs and CC a bit (tap for debuffing, charge if you want better AoE CC effects). TK Maelstorm gives you a large burst AoE and CC, while MLeech can add to the helpful debuffs and toggle/form procs. The pets can add some more single-target dps, and you can fill in any spare time w/ taps of Ego Blast. Gears mostly for Dex, w/ some Con and Pres.

This build puts more of a focus on dmg, though you could take a more support/off-healer approach by taking Shadow Manifest as the toggle/form (its in Darkness) instead and focusing more on Pres, and prob getting a Hybrid aura like Seraphim or a Sorc aura then (and using the Hybrid role, ofc).

I'm more going for personal DPS, since I've never CC'd in CO before.

So far, I've tested this build in the Powerhouse battle station and it looks good. The only change I made was replacing Eldritch Shield with Telekinetic Shield, then used one of the remaining two points on Telekinetic Reinforcement.

Well, in that case the CC effects can just be coincidental here- you can just tap Sleep and MStorm for the many debuffs they can help proc, and TK Maelstrom is a decent wide burst AoE anyways. Changing the block enhancer is fine too, if you want to do so.

Just curious. Which gives more bank for the buck in a build with Mental Leech, Mental Storm and Ego Sleep (and Shadow of Doubt for kicks): Ego Blast with Mind Opener or Mind Break with the extra damage it does when ML, MS and SD run their course?

I usually take Ego Blast cause w/ the MO adv you can just tap-spam it between hitting all the cds and stuff, assuming you're getting TP Reverb. There's some merit to purging Dependency if you want a bit of a burst heal, but for a dps that's not really a priority either, and you have many other ways to add healing besides. Else, the MB burst dmg comes at the expense of ending the debuffs, and you don't exactly apply them that quickly if relying on the TP DoTs for them.

Hmm, I wonder if this could work OK as a real dual build. 2 passives and 2 forms. One for CC/Debuffs and some minor healing. The other to provide more damage (understood that Pre won't be great as PSS).

I guess I'm just wondering what you'd plan to do w/ it, as it'll just depend on the content if you can get any good mileage from trying to use another role. If you want to be a CC'er in casual content, though, then you'd want a stun somewhere, since those hold up to inc dmg (I'd prob replace SoD w/ one). As is, the build has more of the dps backbone to it- which can be fine, depending on your goals.

Well, the thought would be to use AoPM with Manipulator to do some CC and debuff targets and buff the team when that seems useful. When CC is not needed, but the team stat boost and debuffing would be useful then go AoPM and Shadow Manifestation for a bit more personal dps. If I need to do more damage, but some CC would still be useful, then Ego Form and Shadow Manifestation (e.g. soloing stuff in QWZ) would be the option. Atm I have poisoned shuriken for a stun, but could switch Ego Blast to Shadow Blast w/ adv for another stun. He also has Psionic Accelerator for more CC.

Eh, I would prob keep Ego Blast since you're using TP Reverb and Stress anyways. SoD isn't really adding that much either way, since its not great for dps, nor does it CC. Its dmg reduction debuff can be okay, but that takes some buildup and you already have Sleep w/ adv and Impact that can do that. So if you wanted to free up a power slot for w/e reason, I'd first look there.

Hmm, How about this then. Swapped in TK Barrage for more Stunning and AoE. Thought about Curse, but the voodoo doll animation with it doesn't fit the theme. Could go with Hex of Suffering potentially.

Yea, Barrage can work. Its a bit costly and tight in its AoE, but it is spam-able and goes upto 100ft. Regardless, you have a few stun options available to you to help lockdown trash with, so you can experiment w/ diff stuff if you want.

Alright, but since this is meant to be a dual passive build, make sure energy is also good when using Ego Form (should be okay, but testing can verify).

Tested in the PH and no Energy issues with the Ego Form variant (even with CD mods in the utility primary). Locks down all the mobs nicely and took hardly any damage. TKB followed by PA and then a flurry of ML, MS, Ego Sleep and Ego Blast looks very effective.
