Ok, I've tried to understand this time and time again and I simply cannot. Those bits I made red...why do they exist? Why are the names of the people(who I would guess are Lordgar just for the joke) hidden? Are they ashamed that they worked on CO? Is Cryptic afraid we'll figure out the actual dev team numbers(which, BTW, isn't a secret over at STO and wasn't a secret in CO in beta through the dev diaries)? Were they not cool enough to get codenames? Seriously, why the secrecy? I just don't get it.

If you cannot give me the answer behind the red bits that's cool. Don't lose your job over this or anything but PLEASE tell me why it's a secret and why you cannot. That's the bit I'm curious about.

P.S. I also don't get stealth patching, ESPECIALLY if it's a positive praise-worthy change. Just thought I'd add that bit while I was typing.

Some of them are Infrastructure guys, shared with other games. I'm not even sure they have dev names, and I didn't feel comfortable using their first names.

    Literally.

Emotes are now "banned". Trying to use any emote will result in a message:
    "Banned command emote"

Or if you are using chat commands:
    "Banned command em"
    "Banned command e"

I guess you could call this a fatal error!

EDIT: Ah, saw trailturtle's post in a topic. Still, I find this hilarious. Emotes causing zone crashes? Has CO's code become this unstable?

Emotes are a really characterful part of the game.. just tried playing without any. Definately experienced a marked decrease of fun.

Hope this bug gets fixed soon or my pile of unfinished x-box games might start shrinking while Champs gets to be the one sat aside instead.

    Dear Cryptic,

Please fix this soon. And while you're working on emote code, how about adding the in-system emotes (like the ones pulled three years ago that are now in NWO) that could be in game, and which we have asked for for years, as a way of making it up to us?

    Sincerely, but unemotively yours,

This time your answer is perfectly acceptable and appreciated. Thanks you.
There will, however, likely come a next time(likely in reguards to Cryptic North) when this question comes up again so, if not already, you might want to suggest starting the "code name" process for them so we can get a head start on something resembling some communication from/about them.

    As for Thundrax's suggestion...

    /signed

I know the emotes have been documented. I know the emotes are something the devs are aware of(and have been for quite some time). So, yeah...it's about bloody time IMO. Make it so....please.

I think the problem with emotes were not the emotes in and of themselves (the animations), but rather the combination of the emote and the accompanying chat spam (the "Character@GlobalName is doing the Leg Kick" announcement).

In City of Heroes, this was never a problem; you activated an emote, the character just did the animation, no added chat spam. I always found it odd that it even HAD accompanying chat spam in CO, STO and even NW, for the fact of "I see the character dancing/sitting/whatever... why the eff does it need to be announced as well?" But hey, I have common sense, something so rare these days that it's considered a superpower.

Since whatever broke the system is because of the tie between the animation and the chat announcements, just do everyone a favor and reactivate the emotes without the chat spam associated with the emotes. Problem solved.

Feel bad for all the people who got banned by PWE for 'excessive emoting'

The utterly lazy response and lifetime bans of innocent players goes way beyond incompetence.

I mean seriously you didn't cross reference the persons location with the zone(s) that crashed? Because if they were in Vibora Bay #X when Millennium City #X crashed and kicked its occupants, THEN THEY DIDNT CAUSE THE ISSUE.

Pull your heads out and vet your data FFS.

Their sweep may have turned up some false positives. If they really were innocent in the whole thing, they need to contact Customer Service and get their data looked at. If it was indeed a false positive, then they should get their accounts unbanned.

No. Currently, emotes are disabled, so nothing will happen; if you had done that before they were blocked, you would do calisthenics without causing issues; after we put in a fix on Thursday, it won't cause any issues.

There was a very particular glitch/exploit, which involved using emotes in a particular odd way, that crashed servers. This would not come up in normal play.

    Not using. Abusing.

When you find an exploit, you're supposed to report it and keep it quiet (yeah yeah "It was around since beta," whatever). You don't tell your friends about how funny it is to ruin a bunch of peoples' afternoons.

If you did it once by accident, fine. If you keep doing it, knowing what you're doing, hell yeah you should be banned. No one should have thought that this was okay to do.

Using the feature is fine. Exploiting a bug in a feature is not fine. It's especially not fine when it screws the entire server over.

It wasn't just people crashing the servers by going /emote jumpingjacks. They were doing it in a specific circumstance in a specific way using specific methods that lied outside of normal use. Most RPers probably had not used emotes in such a manner. And that's probably evidenced by the game going four years with lots of RPers and this exploit not coming up in all that time.

I don't know if that's something I want to do. Once the actual fix for this goes live, people might find another permutation of the same exploit that causes the same issue. So I don't want to spread things around.

That being said, what I do "know" of the exploit is things gathered from lots of other players. I've never tested the exploit to see if it worked. But what I heard was believable and plausible, not to mention that I heard about it before the temporary fix was applied, which cemented the fact that it was indeed emotes causing the server crashes. So there's at least some proven truth to what I'd gathered.

So I guess that, also, explains why, when our heroes use the AH, and the Computer Counter emote activates during object interaction, the server does not crash.

    Small blessing, I guess.

So apparently Cryptic/PWE is no longer capable of discerning someone using a bug to crash the zone servers and someone who has emotes bound to powers.

Per TT's request the person who was banned for 'excessive emoting' sent customer service the proof they did not crash zones like someone else was doing.

    Here is the response:

    [removed]

WOW, are you freaking kidding me? This is absolutely freaking ridiculous considering you cant parse more than 'excessive' emoting and just crap on players without any knowledge or foresight. Talk about incompetence. This is beyond unbelievable. You banned innocent people in this ridiculous sweep and then tell them to appeal just to crap all over them again. This user was in THE POWERHOUSE ARENA and could not possibly be the one crashing Millenium City Zones. The perpetrator HAD TO BE IN THE ZONE when it crashed. Period.

Seriously, you people make me sick. The level of incompetence is beyond sad at this point.

WooHoo Thanks for the new emotes!

Sure i'd like there to have been less dances and more roleplaying hero emotes, like taking various heroic stances, skulking in shadows, perching on rooftops, serious version of thumbs-up, sort of things but i'm not knocking what i got. In fact i INSTANTLY purchased the new emote set from the store the very first thing upon getting into the game, before doing the new mission and in fact when i should have already gone to bed.

You know what would get more cash out of my pocket? Another set of purchasable emotes for Roleplaying purposes.
