Archetypical Costume Challenge

Pick an Archetype and come up with a costume for it.

Make note of what inspired your design, interesting tricks you used, and bits of the costume you're particularly happy or unhappy with.

Bonus points if the design is not immediately obvious for the Archetype, but still fits it well.

Perferably screenshots rather than costume files so you can see it without loading the game up.

---

It was tough and time consuming, and some of the designs are decidedly less inspired than others, but I managed to make one for every current archetype. And they're all women... because... I dunno, if I'm going to spend hours playing dress up it feels more comfortable if the subject is female.

Inferno: Pyre
Inspiration: Warhammer Bright Wizards
Notes: I like how the orange swirl tattoo suggests an internal heat. Fur and spiky hair does well in suggesting flames.

Tempest: Fulgora
Inspiration: Steampunk
Notes: The Tesla set seems to work well for steampunk. The Formal set has options useful for lightning themed costumes.

Marksman: Green Hood
Inspiration: Robin Hood
Notes: Not entirely happy with this costume, but not really sure why. Jester torso tights with fake skin colouring and a fur shoulderpad yields a shirt with a short and long sleeve, which I thought would be fitting for an archer.

Scourge: Swarm
Inspiration: Scourge lends itself easily to a mystical theme. So I made a power armored insect themed alien thing instead.
Notes: Destroyer, Roinesh and carapace pieces work well to suggest an insectlike alien armor.

Squall: Pazuzu
Inspiration: Pazuzu, king of wind demons in Assyrian mythology. An evil invoked to chase other evils away.
Notes: The desert, fantasy and wizard sets are useful for providing a loose, flowing look for a desert themed sorceress.

Soldier: Commando Leopard
Inspiration: Terrible Mass Effect pun
Notes: That long hip armor piece works well with 90s set. Viper pieces suggest fangs for more than just snakes.

Glacier: Ice Queen
Inspiration: I wanted to make an Ice character with more than just the earth costume set
Notes: Carapace, Demonflame and Ancient pieces can work well as alternatives for icy armour.

Mountain: Earthmother
Inspiration: Earth elemental
Notes: broken antlers suggest branches, earth set suggests rock and bark, vine set suggest wood and vines, fur/feathers for leaves and roinesh for wood and metal.

Master: Xuan Qi
Inspiration: Chun Li ripoff
Notes: Nothing really to note, except that we really need more asian themed clothes. There is a criminal lack of cheongsam in this game.

Invincible: Sororitas
Inspiration: Warhammer 40K Sister of Battle
Notes: Bird people, Steelhawk and Nighthawk sets are useful for Imperial theme. Probably wouldn't been better for Soldier, but oh well...

Behemoth: Bold Eagle
Inspiration: Captain America, Bald Eagle, USA flag
Notes: The messy white hair, brown skin and golden boots are meant to evoke the image of the bald eagle, with the golden nose guard beak. The snake ninja set can be useful for bird themes, as the scales can also suggest feathers and the fangs can suggest talons. Stars and stripes, pretty self explanitory.

Disciple: Holo Girl
Inspiration: Astro Boy. Holographic armor and blades instead of the usual psychic/mystical source. "Holo Girl" is a play on both the word 'holographic' and the fact that the girl is a 'hollow' soulless robot.
Notes: Maybe should've went with red holograms instead... Metal tights with retro future/inlay patterns and flesh colouring to suggest a gynoid. Chest actually has patterened armor disguised to look like it's part of the main body. Skullcap helmet for robot hair, armored chin with flesh colour for a more robotic face without using actual robot face.

Unleashed: Ronin
Inspiration: Samurai, Miko
Notes: Harajuku butt-bow + sash works for an obi. Harajuku handwrap seems to look nicer than normal staps.

Blade: Isabella
Inspiration: Isabella (Dragon Age 2) ripoff
Note: Because there can't exist a collection of costumes without a pirate in there somewhere. Buttcape + Persian loincloth belt is an interesting combo, coloured the same so it looks like one piece.

Devestator: White Lioness
Inspiration: Warhammer White Lion, gladiator
Notes: Veteran lion gladiator pieces work well with fantasy cape, viking set and fur for a lion theme. The torn cape is flesh coloured on the inside, and white on the outside to suggest a lion pelt.

Fist: Kunoichi
Inspiration: Ninja
Notes: I have a pirate already, so clearly I also need a ninja in here.

Void: The Librarian
Inspiration: Succubus, Hot Librarian fantasy. It's fun to imagine her penalty for a late return.
Notes: Forgot to increase thigh size. Medium skirt makes the thighs thinner for some reason.

Grimoire: Violet Stone
Inspiration: Modern day witch
Notes: Cowboy pieces work surprisingly well with fantasy and wizard pieces for a mystical look on mundane clothing.

Impulse: Iron Maid
Inspiration: Iron Man, french maid outfit. When the housekeeper of a rich weapons inventor is rendered quadraplegic in a car crash, her employer gifts her with a suit of powered armor controlled by her thoughts. In repayment she acts as his bodyguard (and continues to clean his house).
Notes: I quite like how the shoulders look like part of the dress

Specialist: Vigil Aunty
Inspiration: terrible pun
Notes: I tried to go for low tech with a coat, dishwashing gloves, biker goggles and some military gear for an amateur vigilante/pulp kinda look.

Savage: Dracona
Inspiration: lizardman
Notes: the bird people feet also work really well as lizard feet. I got the colouring slightly off though. I quite like how the snake ninja chest works with the scaly skin.

Night Avenger: Kitsune
Inspiration: Catwoman
Notes: I like the basic look of the costume, but there's not actually all that much to suggest the fox theme. The ponytail was suppost to suggest a fox tail, but not sure that worked... probably should've given her red hair but she's supposed to be Japanese. I rather like the v-line boots and wedding gloves matching pattern.

Radiant: Crusader
Inspiration: Crusaders, knights
Notes: I quite like the way the tunic, belt and loincloth together form a red cross over much of the costume and the way the Persian arm accessories look like they're tucked into the gloves.

Mind: Pink Eye
Inspiration: Mind lends itself to psychic/mystical, so I went with a robot.
Notes: Several Mind abilities come from the head, so with the robot eyepiece it can look like they're shooting from the eye.

Inventor: Dr Verruckt
Inspiration: Mad scientist
Notes: So many people made the mistake of thinking her Doctor title implied medical training. So she went and got said training as well. Sometimes she insists people call her Dr Dr Verruckt.

OK, here are mine. I keep my second slot free so I can design character appearances when the spirit moves me.

    Grimoire: Herne the Mystic
Inspiration: Herne the Hunter in two-tone civies
Notes: Very gauche, meant to be tacky. Didn't feel I got the legs rights, as I would have preferred a more obvious stag's haunch appearance.

    Grimoire: Technomancer
Inspiration: Fu Manchu / Peter Sellers Robot Wizard
Notes: I was pretty pleased with this one but I was never all that sure if the facial features could be seen by other players. It may have been too busy with lots of complex patterns.

I'll refrain from posting here the Samurai/Pirate mash-up I experimented with because I don't think he worked to well and he was far too obvious.

Superhero stories, done well, are about modern archetypes.

A Prootwaddle is one of the weirder player-character races in "The Fantasy Trip", Steve Jackson's first published role-playing game.

O.o wow... oniganon you got some darn good costumes. It would be really hard for me to pick any definite favorites, as I loved most of them.

Really, really, really good job in here.

As for participating... hmm lets see if I can come up with something to share.

    Inferno: Meltdown
Inspirations: The pre-alert fire character, Starcraft Firebats
Notes: Because of the nature of fire attacks, you actually don't see that many non-organic/non-mystical fire characters. To add to that, the Warlord bracers don't usually see the light of day due to their unusual restrictions, so I decided to put them to use on this character.

    Tempest: Bright Idea
    Inspirations: CoH Clockwork, Lightbulbs
Notes: Still think I need some more color on this one. I instantly saw the Lemurian helmet and thought of a lightbulb. Costume otherwise is pretty much only good for show, because that big glowing head clips like crazy while doing normal running animations and such.

    Marksman: Journeyman
    Inspirations: DnD rangers and bards
Notes: Very medieval with a slight tinge of superhero style with the mask. Probably could've chosen more lively colors.

    Scourge: Hive
Inspirations: Left 4 Dead, Half Life, Zombies
Notes: A mix of mundane and alien - you can tell this thing is a heavily mutated man. Probably needs a better hand option for the left side.

    Squall: Zephyrus
    Inspirations: Greek mythology, stormclouds
Notes: As noted above, I wanted the body and hair to make him look like a huge walking cloud wearing a toga. Original plan would've fit in some grey vine parts to look like air wisps, but the skirt and chest pieces got in the way.

    Soldier: Glaive
Inspirations: 90s stuff - Street Fighter's Cammy, Liefeld, & Contra.
Notes: Finally found a hairstyle that doesn't clip with that stupid headband. The super radical 90s motif began there with the do, and just sort of snowballed into this thing.

    Glacier: Coldheart
Inspirations: Jack Frost, Jotun, Ice Titan
Notes: Head and glowing chest are the only things I really like with this one. The torso is almost entirely made up of rock parts, mainly because they're the only remotely organic looking things with enough angularity and size to make the stickly build of this guy look proper. The fur pants were merely added in because the hips and torso didn't seem to join up too well without them.

    Mountain: Prolythic
    Inspirations: Some hebrew man-clay-stone thing.
Notes: Just look at them shoulders and horns - I love the way the top of the character looks. It's a pretty good mix of organic and standard armored styles, otherwise.

    Master: Fuzhong Long
Inspirations: Kungfu movie masters, Street Fighter's Gen
Notes: I would've used the wizard shirt if it had let me use the persian belt with it. Oh well, he's stuck with a sleeveless version of the outfit I wanted him wearing. Something tells me it would look better on a girl. Last note is that the shoes came out pretty good.

    Invincible: Tinman
    Inspirations: Gigantor, and the obvious.
Notes: Tried something different with the coloring here, going for a more cartoonish blue tint. Worked out in the end, especially with the orange eye highlights and chest light. It's not apparent from this angle or configuration, but this guy was fraught with clipping issues concerning those Cyberpunk limbs and the chestpiece.

    Behemoth: The Wall
    Inspirations: Pink Floyd, and castles.
Notes: Makes me wish there was a proper bricklike texture for tights. In my head, the character wore something more resembling an open-mouth sallet, and his shoulder shawl being a bit wider and having a sort of parapet-like pattern.

Ooh, some nice stuff. I'm really digging Zephyrus and Meltdown.
That is awesome dude, think I could have the costume file for Crusader and Kitsune please?

Sorry man, none of the costumes I've made for this thread are actually saved as costume files. I can tell you basically what every character is wearing though.

Crusader: Metal chainmail tights all over, chainmail partial mask, circlet, celestial eye acc, spartan cape, default Chest Wear with middle stripe, Persian arm acc, Egyptian short skirt, Knight boots/gloves/pauldron/leg acc.

Kitsune: Golden Age Face Mask, Luchador collar, Curves Open New Millennium torso tights, Formal set wedding gloves, extra long boots heeled, Cowboy set rope leg acc, combat straps hipwear.

These looked really cool and I'm surprised more people aren't joining in on this. I'll probably try some though as a Silver my options will be limited.

Nice works, but since these are supposed to be for ATs, shouldn't most of the costumes be made with parts only available to Silver players?

Been busy so I've only gotten two done so far. Did make variants for both genders and plan on doing more. Since I'm still Silver, these should all be newcomer compatible. Did run into interesting quirks considering differences in parts available.

    Behemoth: Fight Streeter
    Male 1 - Male 2
    Female 1 - Female 2
Inspiration: Cody from Final Fight and Street Fighter
Notes: Sort of a mix of Cody's casual Final Fight clothes and his prison outfit. I think the female version came out a little better since it seems less of a direct knockoff. Dorky sounding name is a reference to one of the early home ports of SF being named "Fighting Street".

    Mind: Malevolent Instructor
    Male 1 - Male 2
    Female 1 - Female 2
Inspiration: Evil anime high school teacher
Notes: Aimed for something seemingly mundane yet hinting at more lurking behind those reflective glasses. The female variant suffers from changes due to bad clipping and missing parts (unless I just overlooked those shoulders).

Ah... probably. But I totally suck at keeping track of that sort of thing, so it's not going to happen from me.

If anyone wants to have a go at that though, feel free.

Maybe some players will be inspired to buy some of the costume sets by this? >.>
