Will any joypad or joystick be able to take advantage of the special joy binds? I can't use a keyboard and the xbox 360 controller is killing my index fingers so I'm looking for a new controller. I just want to make sure it won't be money wasted.
Oh, and I realize I can use a program to remap keyboard commands - I'd just like something that works natively.
Xbox 360 controller works nicely for me, but I can see how it would irk you. I'm guessing holding both triggers to block is killing your index fingers? If that's the case you should see if you can make block into a toggle, there should be a thread buried here somewhere for how to turn block into a toggle so you'd only have to tap the triggers.
If it has software to map controller buttons to keyboard keys, then yes, it will work, but you'll have to use the software. Logitech has such software for their controllers. I'm not sure about other companies.
You can remap every controls. I have a replica of the xbox controller (only worth 20$) made by saitek that was un-recongnized when taking selecting the xbox gamepad option in the game, so I had to select joystick. In two second, I had setted my two joystick to the move / camera with proper angle, and mapped all the individual buttons to their respective controls.
I have to say that Cryptic actually putted a lots of efforts in the gamepad controls and that I am quite impressed. I would have never thought that MMOs could have been played with controllers and the idea always seemed like really silly to me considering there can be 300 buttons to press and a lots of monsters to target but they actually created a system that work pretty damn well.
I played a few melee / ranged characters and loved it. The ranged characters take a little bit more practice tough and might be a little bit slower when needed to quickly select specifc target within a huge group of monsters. Other than that, the controls / UI are perfect. The game even start showing little icon such as (A)(B)(X)(Y) and all the other controller icon inside the UI over the usual Z, 1,2,3,4, T and other shortcut which make the navigation pretty straight forward.
I use a Logitech gamepad and use the free version of Xpadder (because Logitech is a stupid company and can't be bothered to develop a program that uses profile switching, which a few programmers have done alone). I have a fairly extensive keybinds set up for playing this game (which I haven't played in a few months, actually).
Can anyone give me an example of how to type a bind to the controller? I'm using the PS3 controller and it works fine, its just that I want to press the PS button to toggle through friendly characters and that function is not available in the control binding window. I know that I could use /bind n "target_friend_next" to bind that function to the n key, but I can't seem to figure out how to bind to the controller.
Also, the PS button is button 17 on the controller if that helps. Thanks in advance
I have a Saitek gamepad, and it was not recognized as a gamepad but as a joystick only. That made the button configuration wonky, and the axis controls all but unplayable. Not a fun experience, and I gave up teh concept of gamepad.
DCUO practically demands use of gamepad, so i picked up a Logitech F310 for about $20, and it is very cool and very user friendly. It has made CO a lot of fun, and I have come to prefer it over m&k.
All that being said, it is probably so similar to the xbox controller that you would have the same issues.
I have not figured how to bind in actions to my controller, It all seems to set already? The camera controls or too sensitive, can that be changed?
Yes, here is a thread that talks all about binds for the Xbox controller. You can change the camera sensitivity in the controls menu.
If you have a controller, but not an Xbox 360 controller, you can use bind commands the same way. You just have to refer to the buttons differently, instead of "start", "rtrigger", etc, you will have "joy1","joy2", etc. Windows names the buttons after numbers (you can check the number of each button in the windows control panel).

Download the free version of Xpadder here:
