Mix and match nemesis henchmen?

Just to clarify, when I go to pick the henchmen for my nemesis, it gives me 20 different types to choose from, and 4 different categories (melee henchmen/ranged henchmen/ melee villain/ ranged villain) . . . Do I get to choose a different type for each category (i.e. undead melee henchmen with vampire ranged villains) or am I just picking one type and they went to all the trouble to give me four buttons to see what each category looks like for the one type I get to pick?

I don't think you're really choosing the melee/ranged separately.

You choose premade groups. Like Aliens or pirates. Not both. Those include ranged and melee.
