New players! First impressions

To kickstart things - holy crap the character creator is pretty insane! We literally spent an hour trying to get our character the way we wanted it LOL. Kudos to the Champions team, I haven't seen many MMORPGs with character creation that fun!

First impressions: https://youtube.com/watch?v=LFcSXD27lUM

We're happy to become a part of the community! Quick question though: What has a better story, Champions Online or DC Universe Online?

    Glad you're enjoying CO.

With regards to story, DCUO has a much more centralized plot to it than CO does. However, I feel that CO is much more open-ended with different avenues of story to follow as you play. Like, DCUO's plot follows a common goal with which you are performing different tasks to achieve based on where you go. CO has different plots and stories that most of the time do not correlate to the other stories within CO.

Personally, I like CO's open-endedness more. Feels more like a "choose your own adventure" thing, which is very fitting since there are so many different ways to create your character(s).

I like Champions' story much more than DCUO's. With DCUO, you're not really a superhero or a super villain, you're just a normal human who has nanites infecting your blood stream. The nanites contain the DNA of every DC hero and villain. The powers you choose are you essentially choosing what powers the nanites give you. You're forced to do the tutorial with every new hero/villain, and it always involves you being saved by either Superman or Lex Luthor. The entire rest of the game you play a glorified sidekick to which ever hero/villain you chose to be your mentor. No matter how much you play, or how strong you get, you'll always be overshadowed by the main DC characters.

In CO, the story is much more diverse. It's not just one main story, but several stories depending on where you go and what you do. The tutorial, which is optional after your first run through, is much more entertaining than DCUO's. It also establishes from the start, that you are you're own hero. And that you can be equal to, or greater than, the main NPC's of the Champions' Universe. You have the ability to create your own story for your character, and will never feel like a glorified sidekick. The big name heroes of CO will always treat you like an equal, and you'll either be fighting along side them, or saving them yourself. Even the NPC Civilians will come up to you, in awe, and talk about the great deeds you've done as you progress through the game. And you have much more freedom to be the hero you want to be.

It's true DCUO gives you the ability to do things you could never do in CO, but CO is still the superior Superhero MMO, in my opinion. It's just sad PWE doesn't treat it as such, and Cryptic has become so limited on what they can do with the game now. Plus, the CO community is much more entertaining than the DCUO community.

Welcome ashekun and friends(?) Trusting that you know that most games have their bitter types. I've been playing for 6 years and enjoy the game for what it is. You're fortunate that you are coming in at a time when the game is seeing a fair amount of (re)development. There was a real dry spell for awhile. Have fun! Hope to see you at Cosmics at some point.

I've been playing Champs for over five years, and still enjoy the game quite a lot. The character customization is what I like the most, but in the past eighteen months, endgame content has been added that I really enjoy.

DCUO has lots going for it, and I played there for a year, but kept coming back to CO, and finally gave up DCUO entirely. I didn't care for the overall storyarc, and I didnt like endgame play on DCUO very much.

Also, when in-game, CO community/chat/groups seem friendlier and more open to me than in DCUO.

If you need help, advice, some gear, some resources, etc, just look me up in game @roughbear.

To be honest the character creator is the best part of the game, it's what sold me on it, there's also a lot of lore to sink your teeth into. The game itself is kind of a mixed bag, some fun missions, some dreadful ones

And this CO is superior superhero mmorpg is nonsense. Logically the one that retains more customers is crowned that winner. And last time I checked a couple of months back DC Universe Online is squashing on this like a boot does onto a pesk bug on the ground..

Superiority and Popularity are two different things. Other than having more customers, DCUO really has nothing over CO. CO offers more variety, customization, better game play, and an overall more heroic feel than DCUO. As I stated before, DCUO makes you feel like a glorified sidekick, rather than an actual hero. Plus the locations you can go to in DCUO are kinda bland. And the places you actually want to visit are usually off limits, or covered in those stupid "bottles".

Just because they have a larger subscriber base, does not mean they are superior. Don't forget, CO is only for PC. DCUO is for PC, PS4 and Xbox One. It has a higher customer base because it can pull in the console crowd, who's MMO options are fairly limited.

I go back between DCUO and CO all the time. they both have their strong points IMO.
about story, even though DCUO has probably more story oriented content, i can't get into it (maybe because I'm not really into DC person) i feel like CO's story is a bit more broad and lets you be more yourself? I don't know if it makes any sense XD

What does CO have over DCUO? RP and the ability to feel like the big hero not the sidekick. DCUO has gameplay. if you're looking for innovative or fun mechanics and challenging bosses, CO is not your game. If you're big into RP you still may get a kick out of CO and its amazing character creator. Until another game which offers similar comes along.

One of the bitter types that keeps claiming they are quitting every week. While older content was dumbed down significantly offering the best solo experience on the market, latest content has been designed for team and large team oriented game play.

I'll admit it's been about a year since I played DCUO, but I don't remember anything about it being challenging. And I don't consider being able to hold one button down and mow through mobs as excellent game play, but that's just me.

I'm going to give an example here. The last time I played DCUO, I made a joke character. Given the limited amount of customization in the game, for creating a compelling character, I didn't feel bad for creating this particular clone. It was Rygar. For those that don't know, The Legendary Warrior Rygar was a game for the NES. It featured a guy in red, roman armor, wielding a shield that he would throw and it would return to him. I created this character using the roman like costume sets from some of Wonder Woman's early missions. I also gave him DCUO's Shield weapon, which has a ranged combo attack involving throwing the shield.

I was able to get through the game with little to no issue using only the ranged, shield throwing combos. I never once used the primary melee attacks, or the secondary powers, just the ranged throwing combos and the occasional shield block. Yet this is what people consider "Innovative and fun mechanics, with challenging bosses".

I wouldn't say that. DCUO's gameplay is very bland it's mouse button pressing for the most part. Sure you can throw in an occasional power but for the most part you are learning how to tap or hold down mouse click sin proper sequence in a poor attempt to recreate Arkham style game play.

I tried DC as well, but came back to CO as fast as possible for the variety and customization. It's too bad you don't get a good feel for that early on.

I think DCUO was intentionally designed so that you can choose to emphasize your weapon, or powers. One of the few things I remember about the skill system was that it shared points between the two. So speccing into your weapon meant not speccing other things.

It's been a while though. I quit when their server got hacked back in 2010 or 2011. It apparently corrupted my password, and I was never able to log back in. I'm sure you can guess what their customer support said....
