The reason given when this was first announced was allegedly due to farming by bots. I don't believe that explanation for a second. I've never had trouble finding skill nodes when farming.
I use gold for various campaign item creation. I farm skill kits regularly, so I spend gold there. I run professions like a madman. My main character is currently sitting on 110+ gold. I don't see the problem.

I do the same. And a bag for enchants/runes, and one for refining stones/gems that I hoard until 2x refinement. I also agree with the observation about bag space.
