Don't rush to spend money you'll regret later. There is so much in the early game that you do not need to spend money on. Maybe pick up 2 extra char spots and use your alts for banks. There are 2 quest early off that give you a 12 slot bag each. I did buy a Greater Bag of Holding because I am a pack rat (1k zen) and I bought a respec token to rebuild my Hunter Ranger once I got to 60.
Dragon born. Bags and companions. Also a nice Mount as those from zen market are account wide and not character bound. Also have a look if there is a specific booster pack for your class.
No do not upgrade your companions. also you can find bag quests on the wiki. one is in black lake other is in neverdeath. When you hit 60 you will want to get an Ioun stone for your companion, and find a guild as soon as you can they are a great help, don't be afraid to leave a crappy one if you find a better one too.
You should have both free bags by level 30. As far as what to buy, I recommend either the dragon born or the champion of the north pack. I'd lean more towards the champion of north one because is has the drow exile race, an epic weapon with an enchantment, a mount, and companion (and some other stuff) for you already in it and their both pretty good. The dragon born is a very good pack and it'll come with a bag, hoard, and artifact along with the dragon born race and a dragon price of gear (neck, belt, reinforcement) but the thing with dragon born is most of the stuff you get will be character bound, so you only get it once, and a lot of the things in it you wont find a use for it till post 60. The north pack everything is character wide so you get them on all future characters as well. I like the north pack better because it seems it has more value. Can't go wrong with either pack, the dragon born race is really good to min/max characters, probably the best race in the game for most classes. and I find people usually buy that pack to get a high gs quick, and it does have really good advantages (or just to be a bad *** dragon dude)
As far as a companion again the one in north is good. Eventually you'll want to get an augment companion like one if the stones. Don't worry about your current companion.
If you need someone to play with I'm leveling another character right now. I'd be more than happy to help you out. And it'll level me quicker lol.
I found an extra greater bag of holding necessary. But then I'm a bit of a hoarder.
An augment companion will be very useful once you hit 60.
A 80% quality mount also extremely useful.
If you're going to try lots of different classes you'll also need to buy a couple of extra char slots.
A char respec *might* be useful at 60 if you really want to maximise your char and fix those mistakes you made with your powers, feats and ability scores when you didn't know what you were doing.
All that will cost you about 5000 Zen. Anything else is probably just cosmetic. Not sure the Dragonborn is really worth the $ is it?
HAMSTER it looks like you can't go back and get some quests once you pass them up. The quest in Blacklake that gives the bag is no longer available.
As noted before, the two packs are good. Just a clarification though, the champions one is a single character greater bag of holding, while the dragon born pack is an account wide dragon bag that has max slots, as well as an account wide epic ring and artifact.
The best answer? save your money until you need to start leveling artifacts. Enchantments, and artifact gear is the entire grind in this game. Everything else is pointless (except a decent mount) Convert your zen into astral diamonds and play the exchange. That way you will actually continue to make zen even after spending money on it. Win/Win. Cash out periodically on AD and buy refinements as needed. Trust me, I've put 500+ hours into this game.

Also, my companion is maxed at 15. Should I both upgrading him(man at arms) or is he good to go until I reach lvl 60?
