Equipping same gear type from inventory doesn't work

In my case, I have two Burning Executioner Breastplates with different enchantments. Double-clicking the armor from the Inventory, or using the Equip option from the drop-down menu gives the error "Cannot equip more of this item" instead of merely swapping it with what I have currently equipped.
I suspect this is probably a general problem that is occurring in the case where one is switching between the same gear type, and is not just exclusive to this particular piece of armor.

Let me guess your enchantments are soulforged #1 and soulforged #2.
Does this trick still work?
No, you troll. Soulforged and Negation.
Why on earth would anyone bother having such a setup with the same enchant?
Not sure if it still works, PVPers were using it long ago.
