I'm talking about actual companions, not augment companions.
Do items actually make a difference? when I equip an item to my companion his 'stats' on the other page don't increase at all. Only the runestones affect the stats shown there. Is that normal or ...?
I tried equipping and un equipping the item from the companion and i can't notice any real difference in damage from them hitting a dummy from before and after removal. So what's up with that?

Not true. Power increases healing done by healing companions and increases attack damage on strikers, check your log. It just doesn't change any of the display values on the companion char sheet.
Armor Penetration definitely does not work though, crit and recovery are too hard to check but I would imagine they don't work either, so just go with power and hit points.

We know that. We're just saying that the damage and healing that companions do is trivial, with or without the gear.

I got a cold iron warrior with 1500 power, his damage goes from 250ish to 300ish. All it's good for is proc'ing bonding stones.

This is pretty much it. You can't stack enough hp or power for it to make a difference. They don't do enough damage or healing, and they die fast because they stand in the red. This doesn't even get into how they can run into mobs you want to avoid due to their abysmal ai.
Don't put any stones/enchantments on companions, it's almost useless :P
I once had a Cold Iron Warrior which is the best DPS companion (note, not for DPS but DPS companion which does some DPS lol) with his spinning strike. Bought 3 greater indomitable runestones, 3 greater tenebrous, 3 rank 10 radiants and Hero's neck + ring from jewelry profession. He was not too much better than before

They really should overhaul companions before the Xbox release. An Xbox player will purchase one of these companions and discover how useless they are. Last thing PWE needs are a new line of angry customers.

Some stats make a difference. A dire wolf with a lot of life steal and recovery and good defensive stats is actually pretty formidable, but if it eats a lot of AoE, it's still going down. The alchemist is also a pretty solid companion for some questing (lesser bonding stones, Necromancer amulets, Grand Brawler belt).
Companions with melee scripts don't pull as much aggro as ones with ranged scripts, because they stay close to what you decide to fight instead of running away from it. In instanced quests, it doesn't matter.
In a dungeon or in Tiamat, battle companions are no good. But they can be fun to have when you're just farting around.
I have a squire companion that I have leveled up to legendary. With his loyal gear, enchants and bonding runestones he gives me over 5k HP just from the legendary bonus. That on top of the bonding runestones and his other stats gives me as good of stats or better than an ioun stone. That added with his solid heals he has turned out to be a pretty good companion.

May I ask - did you use loyal commander's gear or loyal avenger's? I have healing companions (liliend and alchemist) and thus need to know if +30% bonus to healing is worth it or it is better to increase stats by avenger's gear.

This.
It has no noticeable effect. They die just as quick and do just as little damage no matter what.

Necklace of Loyal Master Augmented, does your toon get the +10% control duration bonus as well?
