Ok, (just writing thoughts - dont get wadded-up)

Since I've been on here waiting for a Reply that didn't come... I began thinking about "Botters" and some of the things to slow down the Problem.
  1. and even *I* hate this - but - Captcha (that can be read) for every Account ..... ugh
  2. IP Logging - true - you can Spoof, but you always leave a fingerprint
  3. IP BAN - now i've been a Tech in and out of USA - if you got someone else's BANNED IP.... consider yourself Lucky and hit a Casino
  4. Some.......Some Games Limit(ed) the following: Chat until certain Level, Chat Tier that killed Spam completely, Time Limit on PRE-POSTED Chat
  5. Security Code Secondary Access - again, another Bummer... but, I've seen it Work - hate it tho

Now that we've established Botters are here like Trolls, I don't really expect this to happen - but

- you hit Enter and just Spam. With a Timer, you make the Botter do more work to circumvent the System..... in most cases- not worth it.

- banning is critical - you might get the wrong person

- account creation is simplified by Arc - no. - Neverwinter then Arc, not Arc then Neverwinter

- botting is part of it - indeed. but, it can grind like a car with no brakes and warped rotors -if handled.

Now again, this is just me thinking about the Game when I started the 1st Day N opened.
Zone? lol - sorry, I think 50%+ turn it off now

Again, these are just a few "off-the-cuff" thoughts that have been Successful in other Games.
on the flip-side - some of these Titles are now Vaporware unless you hit GOG.com and even then -Buena Suerte

However,

I will not beat up on the Devs- when you've been on that side, you learn real quick.... everyone will NOT be pleased.

Deuces.

Your number 4 is already implemented. You can't use zone chat until you have a character on the account over level 15.

They also tried to limit botters by putting spending and trading caps on accounts until they get a character up to 60.

You can't use static systems to deal with these problems. They will just find another way around it.

ahhh that's cool --- i was just thinking outloud...... really didnt think anyone would respond o.O

just writing down thoughts - as many Bots here? Pipedream thinking they gonna be gone any time soon.

cool 1 thing was put in........ i hate Captcha with a passion...

tbh - if i dont need a site - i dont do Captcha, sadly - Captcha would further decay what Started as the best game ever.

If the game is so easy stupid bots can play it without any issue, it's the content, not a tech issue. As long as the content/dungeons don't require a brain to be played, the bots will thrive.

Find a way to track people who buy AD from farmers. Ban those accounts.

If no one is buying than there's no reason to bot.

i see the same handles night after night selling cheap x99 stacks of every variety of enchant and runestone on the AH.. and I don't mean a few stacks but like 100+ or more stacks each day. They have gibberish or autogen'd names, all low level green gear, I send /tells to them and they never reply. If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck..

Cannot be Fey Blessing/Foundry because I don't think those enchants give the runestones also. Some sort of open-world or dung/skirm operation then.

The only way to effectively fight bots is to hit their customers.
Ban people for buying stuff from 3rd party sites, and publish daily list of banned people. Let then cry in forums. That will kill all bots/spammers in no time.

Leadership bots can be easily identified if Cryptic really wants to ban/disable them instead of making things easier for them to get richer. Who will repeatedly log in 50-100 alts 24/7 365 a day at the same time even when it is time they should be sleeping?

Real bots are smart and very hard to detect, they will use slightly random patterns, they will log out, they will wait between actions to give the illusion a human is doing it. An automated anti-bot bot may work, in some cases, but it's limited. And I do have first hand knowledge about it because I used to make bots in python for a browser game I used to play years ago. Even the best anti bot systems can't catch a good bot, unless someone reports it. And even then well, if your bot is well designed, it's extremely hard to prove it's a bot.

They don't just bot for nothing. They have to sell the AD. It is not that hard to track those whose have like 50 alts, don't seem to sleep and log all alts in at a pattern and have a lot of popular items like RP to sell, mostly on the AH.

....Give an intern an admin game account and tell him or her to observe the New Sharandar Char Wash, empower the char to right click => ban everything there. When three chars on one account are banned, the account gets permabanned. Wait for new reports of mass bot sightings...

I think they should make 2 versions of PE one for under lvl 50 and one for lvl 50+ this includes separate zone chat. this way botters can't just make new char and go to PE and annoy the lvl50+ crowd.

No. It's not as simple as you think it is. Tracking good bots takes a lot of manpower. Tracking complex trades schemes (because they're probably using a lot of proxy accounts) takes even more manpower. PWE just fired something like 1/4th of the neverwinter team, including some community managers. Do you really think they're going to hire people to track bots when they can't even fix 1 year-old bugs and never give a positive answer to customer support tickets except if it's a billing issue?

Like I said earlier, as someone with some experience with bots, the ONLY way to stop botting is to make the game difficult enough so that a player can play it but not a bot. The issue is that many people are dumber than bots, or that some MMO players demand that the games they play are more or less on the 3 year-old level, ie not putting the cube into the circular hole to obtain a bag full of awesomness, but that's another story.

#1 Get rid of/change Leadership. (So botters can't freely generate AD.)

#2 You only gain major drops/nodes from any individual daily/weekly/quest instance once per day. (So rerunning the same instance a million times is pointless)
#3 Make the tutorial less bot friendly by having randomized and recursive chat dialog menus as well as randomized quest item nodes. (So botters have a harder time making new alts to spam/bot instances with.)
    #4 Get rid of/change Leadership.

    #9 Get rid of/change Leadership.

#10 Pay someone to actually go through and wipe obvious/known bot accounts once a week.

Ghost Stories entrance seem to be another spot you can see bots farming non-stop

    That made me laugh ruefully.
