In quest "Unwanted Elements", what does Arcane Brotherhood's gem do?

(Warning: this thread contains spoilers of a quest in Icewind Dale.)

I signed contract with Ten-Towns at first, and there is a quest named "Unwanted Elements", in which I have to cure the mad dwarve. In order to do that, I have to ask the representative of Arcane Brotherhood for a Scroll of Break Enchantment, but she refused to help me because I was not with them. And then the quest objective automatically changed to stealing the scroll. For roleplaying reason, I abandoned the quest and didn't continue.

Today I break my contract with Ten-Towns and signed contract with Arcane Brotherhood. Now in quest "Unwanted Elements", the representative of Arcane Brotherhood said Ten-Towners have some documents and she wants to know what they are saying so she gave me a gem and told me to distract Ten-Towners and place the gem in their basket. I haven't done that. Before I do that, I have a question: What does the gem do?

They never really tell you for sure on that one.
Neverwinter players are stubborn things....until you strip them down to bone. (Cursed players, my flowers, MINE!) Oh how I plotted their demise.

I don't remember the exact wording and it's not explicitly explained how the gem works, but I'm pretty sure the gem is a scrying device, so the Brotherhood can listen in to Ten Towner's activities.

It's a magical device that allows the Arcane Brotherhood to spy on the Ten-Towners. This is one of those RP decisions where you have to decide for yourself which faction is in the right.

If you truthfully think the Ten-Towners are in the right than stealing the scroll should be no problem because than you would be stealing from evil invaders who are taking the Ten-Towners resources in the name of research.

If you truthfully think the Arcane Brotherhood is in the right than you should have no problem spying on the Ten-Towners because than you would be finding a way to stay a step ahead of the clueless towns people who don't realize how dangerous the Black Ice is and could harm themselves with it without the proper knowledge.

The decision puts you in a situation where you must decide who is right.

Yeah, the gem is called "Scrying Gem". Sadly, I feel there isn't actually a RP decision in this quest because both stealing and helping others to scry (sneakily peep in this case?) aren't positive things that my lawful-good character should do, even if I consider one of faction as right. There really should be the Diplomacy skill for players to use in such situations.

One more question: Is this quest required to advance the storyline or continue progressing the campaign tree? I already progressed the first step of the campaign tree.

I think you will not be able to process black ice without freeing that mad dwarf (well, all are, so "that" might be wrong here) from his black ice induced illness.
But it seems you have to do a unlawful (well, placing an orb somewhere is not against the law!) to SAFE a dwarf. Might this help you in your dilemma?

I might be wrong, but isn't Black Ice Shaping profession already available to everyone? About the dilemma, I still need some consideration as spying is a questionable act after all.

I really hope I don't have to hide anything or be sneaky, but the question objective told me to distract Ten-Towners first and then place the gem into their basket. Obviously that is a shady and unrepresentable act.

Well, yes, but you do have to finish the introductory quest line to get your first worker.

You get the first worker for the profession through the questline and to make more, you need to have at least 1 worker.

Yes, I have a worker. A Chillwright. Not sure how and when I got her.

This is a necro so it's going to be closed down, but I think it's close to the AB woman iirc. Look for an interactable near her. It's been a good six months since I ran it though.

I know. I had the same thought. I could never decide if he was serious about everything or not.

The Ten Towners are definitely the lesser of two evils, if that makes a difference to you. The Arcane Brotherhood has a known history of being pretty darned evil . . .

Closing this down now. Artemis, if you're still having trouble with the quest mechanics, please feel free to start a new thread on that specifically. Thanks!

    Safe travels,
