if instead of directly splitting off into brackets
let's say, your current system gets a if-then situation added to it
potential players queued up:
20k
20k
19k
16k
15k
14k
14k
10k
9k
9k
well, before any ELO is done
how about looking at a pretermined GS difference?
say "if highest (20k) - lowest(9k) > 3k then do not create a match"
granted 3k doesn't seem like a huge difference, but, it has a pretty high potential, and it could be a starting point
i'd like to think there's enough population to handle this so that queue times aren't blown up...and i'd honestly rather wait longer than get quickly into a match i either have no chance in, or the other team has no chance in...
probably some comments i can see incoming:
"we're a minority, game is pve, people don't care"
probably, so, if they don't care, why not simply add naked pvp since we're a minority?
or better yet, add naked pvp (for the have nots) while keeping gear/elo based pvp (for the haves)
"stop looking at people's gs and worry about playing as a team"
i don't outright look at people's GS....i let the match play out for a few seconds, see how fast they get blown up
usually, 99% of the time, the TTK will be a second or two....THIS is when i look at people's GS...and lo and behold, my team consists of 12 and 10ks and the other team consists of 18 and 19ks
just a suggestion
also, one thing i'd like to suggest for a change is:
change the way scoring works for a contested node
if # of allies > # of enemies on an objective, then continue accruing points
else if # of allies <= # of enemies on an objective, then pause point accumulation from objective
If someone trained me in PvP strategies (My basic strategy is run around like an idiot and smack things until i die horribly), then I'd probably enjoy it more. It's honestly very confusing for me.
it would be very beneficial if they added some pvp tutorial to let newbies get a basic idea
people go in there thinking deathmatch
instead of thinking team based domination
for me, i know a team is going to lose the moment i see more than 1 person go to our closest objective, this is a dead giveaway for a team that doesn't have experience with the scoring system...or simply doesn't care
PVP in this game to me feels like there are two classes of players: the ones who think "PVP is all the rage" - they got all 10's and perfect and legendary and everything who feel superior to everybody else - and the others who consider the former to be a royal pain in the back. PVP is as far away from "fun" to me as a visit to the dentist with a root canal treatment w/o narcotics: I avoid it at all cost.
PvP is dead. Combat system is fun, but PvP is dead.
combat system is amazingly fun
and while i mostly agree it's dead (glyphs, unresistable damage [at least getting looked at], huge GS gap, glyphs glyphs and more glyphs)
i have faith! even if it takes them a month or months to "fix/balance"
my general grasp on the goings ons of this company is, they seem to have a lot on their plates outside of their control, while not maintaining a workforce adequate to tackle all these in a manner that is satisfactory with your generic impatient consumer
i just wish this game and it's pvp the best, because honestly, there is no other MMO that attracts my attention (again, because of the combat system)
Not to seem like an *** but when you ask most players on ANY MMO about pvp help this is the general response you get:
"n00bn00bn00bn00bn00bn00bn00bn00bn00bn00bn00bn00b x100"
It'd be nice if there were more players out there willing to assist the newer players.
I've played MMO's for a long time and I've never EVER liked PVP because I got no help with it (reading help files is absolutely useless in this situation) and even if you thrust someone into the game situation it's a very fast-paced thing. While I'll admit I hate the video game trend of hand-holding, having no direction is worse.

I have tried saying the same thing long before ELO was put in and was told that it was elitist because pvp is all skill. Sad to say it but no matter how skilled you are at some point you will get hit. And that is where the gear is going to make the difference for most classes. Even if your the one doing the hitting its still going to make a difference. But nope I was called an elitist for my thoughts and well yea lol All I can say is it would be nice. Because not everyone that goes in for pvp are in it for the competitive matches. Alot of them just do it for the rough AD on main toon and next to no gear alts.
With that said there should be a place for people to not get ax murdered to do dailies, as well as a matching system that puts them with their own gear lvl so they are not overwhelmed by the professional pvpers ( and no im not saying im pro i die to much to be that XD.) I think that it would be great for the higher geared people to have a chance to fight against people of equal gear as well as for the people still gearing to have the same experience with there own range. Instead of having a fox in a hen house like in most matches XD

i myself try to direct people
this is what happens:
50% of the time, non-english speakers, end up typing nonsense in whatever foreign language, completely have no idea what to do, just keep leaving campfire with a deathmatch mentality...or comparably, people who simply don't care, just want to get their daily done, or have "fun" killing (which in reality ALWAYS means they're getting trashed)
40% of the time, strategies are useless because of insanely fast TTK due to GS/matchmaking imbalance
Here's the worst scenario: When you have someone totally new to PvP and because they are inexperienced, they drag a team down. And instead of a team being like okay do this do that, they're like "oh you (insert naughty word here), you made us lose" and they get trolled. Long story short, that was my first experience PvPing. The second scenario is when the opposing team decides to dogpile the new player and it kills any fun. I understand people have to start from somewhere but there's got to be some regulations

Problem is, if you have someone who has no idea what they're doing and didn't even bother asking for help, with a player who wants to win and knows that if they lose their ranking is going to drop down, you're never going to get something pretty

that. that right there is pretty much one of the main reasons outside my guild that I have stayed. Periodically I try other mmos, but nothing compares to NW's gameplay/combat mechanics

The problem is I usually try to ask around. If I don't know something, there's no point sitting there like a fool trying to figure it out when I can easily get help. Sometimes I think it's because of my gender. Idk

Ding ding ding - we have common sense. I know my first time pvp-ing was spent making mistakes, but, thankfully, I had pug members who communicated and told us where to go.

Check some YouTube of PvP'ers? ^^
i'm not the one that needs help with strategies
and honestly, most pvp videos showcase nothing but how HAMSTER they are
for me, it's very simple, stop them from getting points, if an objective is empty, send 1 guy to cap it or go cap it yourself
hold 2 and win can work most of the time, but i honestly always try to keep them from getting points from completely uncontested nodes
