Galeb Dhur or Laughing Skull

I am finally going to really get into playing Neverwinter now that they are finally coming out with my favorite class, the Warlock and now I am looking for my tank companion.

I already own Galeb Dhur (Friend bought him for me months ago as a gift) but I am curious how he stacks up against the Laughing Skull as the skull just seems to fit with a Warlock a bit better (theme-wise) so I might try to sell Galeb Dhur or trade him to get the skull.

So any thoughts?

So you never used Galeb Dhur? If you did... he is bound now.

I am also curious about the skull.
    Where'd my blinky-blinky path go?

No, I have not used him.

I ended up getting a little frustrated with how much real money I seemed to have to throw at the game for basic stuff like bags and bank inventory space and quit before I opened Galeb Dhur. Now my financial situation has changed a bit so I can invest a bit of cash to get around those issues and honestly, I have been waiting for the Warlock since release so FINALLY I am kind of excited to play Neverwinter.

The skull looks awesome and it is small so not super distracting in a fight however, two of its 3 skills do no damage which concerns me from a raw DPS standpoint though his active bonus to me seems pretty sweet. I also guess three threat/taunt skills might actually means he will hold aggro better though.

Honestly, I love my Frost Mimic. I just wish it didn't cost so **** much to upgrade him to purple status. It is just cheaper to buy a good purple off the Zen exchange it seems.

True. Not that it really needs to be purple. At green it can survive most dungeon encounters long enough to be useful. Just stack def and regen on him and he'll do fine. He did so fine on my HR it really saddened me it had to make room for a stone. I still bring him out when I'm running training sessions with new guildies. A spare tank can't hurt when people are still learning or are -relatively- undergeared. I could perform better on my CW of course, but when the objective is to learn guildies work together it's easier when you're the backup with some heals and a spare tank in your pocket. That way they really need to rely on teamwork instead of me saving their butts all the time, but I can still take control when I have to.

Well I am generally not a min/max type of person but it no matter what, it really doesn't seem to make sense to me to bring something that is half as effective as it could be just because I happen to like its looks. Also unless it can preform the role I need it to perform (Full tank with good threat management) then it is really kind of useless unless I just prefer the challenge being gimped give me hehe.

So yeah if I was going to continue to use the Mimic, I would have to get it upgrade and with the fast leveling pace of this game, well I am going to need him upgraded long before I can acquire the AD I would need to upgrade in just by playing (well unless I get incredible lucky I guess).

Honestly, real money cost is one of the flaws of NW. There is just too much of a paywall just to have the basic necessities such as bank space, bag space, fully effective companions and a full speed mount, all which I associate with your every day game play rather than true convenience items such awesome looking armors, cool looking mounts, etc. You should be able to earn a full set of bags by the time your 60 just by playing. You should have the full amount of bank slots just by playing. You should be able to get a full 110% bland looking donkey, just by playing. You should be able to have a bland looking, purple human striker, controler, defender and healer just by playing. But that is another discussion hehe.

I think I might try to trade my Galed Dhur for a Laughing Skull? Any takers for an even trade?

To be honest, if you are not yet 60 and don't have one yet - get a stone (augment pet). As it stands a pet cannot compete with another 3k stats for your character :p

True. Then again, not many players actually get 3k out of their stone either. that's with what? r8s and purple filled with r8s? Not everyone has a 20.2k character ;)

In the end, you're right though. Once you learn not to depend on your tank but on your own abilities you won't need anything but a stone. But it can take a bit of time getting used to a class. Plus that having Morte at your side screaming "your mother was a troll" is just about the best and most entertaining ride to lvl60 you can give yourself, no matter what you do with it later on.

Well, I actually get 3.5k stats from my stone xD

It uses 3 x lesser bonding runestones, and 3 epics (1 ancient ring, 1 grand ring and wild hunt rider belt) with rank 7 chants. So, its actually not even that pricey to get to that level either comparatively.

I've used Galeb Duhr - on two characters and here's the thing: Active Bonus kindasucks. Though as a summoned companion it is freakin' awesome.

The Galeb Duhr is excellent for: mostly single-target ranged classes: not so useful for melee, except the Trickster Rogue for its squishiness. The Control Wizard has excellent control so may not really benefit from what the Galeb Duhr does.

What the Galeb Duhr does is to single-out the *strongest* of any mob, so if a mob contains several minions and one elite, for example, the Galeb will immediately target the Elite and go right to him (it has a hard taunt). it also 'feels' pretty strong and has great survivability.

This allows your squishy/mostly-single-target class a little breathing room to take out the minions quickly then focus on the Elite. In Boss fights it goes straight for the Boss and I've found it to hold the Boss's agro approximately 50% of the time - which is great so you can whittle down adds, not to mention maintaining Combat Advantage by working on the Boss' backside.

On my first character I was a DC with Galeb Duhr (and this is BEFORE they fixed DC taking the MOST agro of anyone). When I did the Sanitorium in Helms Hold it was all I could to to take out those darned Devils (DC was super-squishy then).

The Galeb kept the boss busy as I did this. Then when I finally eliminated those darn Devils and turn back to the Boss (Rohini if I remember right) - the Galeb literally finished the Boss right in front of my eyes - by itself (!). So I cannot speak for the laughing skull, but I swear the Galeb Duhr is "rock solid" (sorry for the pun).

Yeah I noticed this about Galeb on the preview server. He was really good at distracting the elite so I could sweep up the trash before moving on the Elite. Maybe I will keep him. The Skull just seems to fit the whole Warlock theme a bit better while Galeb seems more Wizardy. Still a Warlock is an arcane user and an Elemental is still arcane so it still works.
