Uneven # of and too much character slots

Wanted to get the account to the 50 slots due to the current sale and assumed the system would prevent me from buying too much. It indeed eventually grayed out and "the character is unable to purchase this item" but logging out checking I realized I had 53 character slots.
That's weird for two reasons. First, you buy them in pairs and so an uneven number is technically impossible (I do not own real money packages that add extra slots) and second, I have obviously three more than the max.
Haven't tested whether I can actually create 53 chars.
