At 200 rep, one of the new Dwarven Valley dailies for Ten Towns is to kill 5 Deathlock Wights. There are limited places where these spawn, so finding 5 involves a lot of riding around and hoping for respawns. I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that calculations for kill sharing are nebulous and fraught with peril if you're not actually partied up. I refrained from "helping" a DC I saw doing the same quest because I didn't want my GWF's massive DPS to override all the work she'd obviously already put in.
I thought maybe starting one of the heroic encounters involving undead would help get the job done quickly. It was inside the quest circle (which is often just a suggestion anyway). But apparently these are the wrong kind of Deathlock Wights, as only the orcish (?) ones will count, not the undead barbarians. Is this really necessary? Most kills from heroic encounters count towards all the other "kill X Ys" dailies, so why not these?
(I can't remember if Kinnera's spiel said anything specifically about undead orcs or not.)
There would be enough Deathlocks if Encounter ones counted for the quest - but they don't. Same with other quests drops (weapons) from undead which don't drop ever from encounter mobs and even with regular mobs their dropping rate seems whimsical at beast. I can't see why HE mobs don't count for quests since in IcePass you can get axes for the quest from Raiders and trout heads from Bear Riders in encounters too.

HE dwarf mobs in DV also count towards quests and drop quest items, so it's just a problem with the undead.
Possibly this is because the same kinds of undead are used for the HEs in both areas?
I'm in agreement. This quest takes a long time to finish since the wights are far from the entrance and there are only a few spawning points for them. Killed a couple in a HE and they did not count even when they were in the area.

This is another of the ninja/looter quests.
When I finally find one, the chances are high that there is a looter in the vicinity waiting out of range for the chance to swoop in and take it.
Devs did a good job repairing the spoiled meat qst to avoid this problem.
Hopefully, they'll respond to these comments and fix this one, too.
Otherwise this one is hardly worth doing with my DC or GF

I did verify yesterday that in the Sleepwalkers quest, proximity counts. So that's one for TT where you don't so badly need to worry about ninjas, although if you pull the undead from a distance, the sleepwalkers will continue their patrol path instead of stopping and cowering, and might get away from you.
Agreed, I just don't do this quest on my GF. An easy fix would be to change the Deathlock Wight requirement to something akin "Undead Wights" and make Battle Wight, Wight Commander and Deathlock Wight all count towards completion as all three types spawn in the marked area and you'd have to kill two or three groups of mobs to complete the quest, which would still keep it slightly above the three messenger quest equivalent and on par with the twenty corrupted dwarves quest.
As it stands now, with just a handful of Deathlock Wights in the area and having to run around finding the right mob group where one actually spawns, this is too far up on the sheer annoyance scale.

They'd have to rewrite the quest in that case, because Deathlocks are specified due to the concern about them raising other undead, which the others don't do.
It would likely be just fine if the ones in heroic encounters counted.

Can we get undead orcs on the heroics instead of undead barbarians?
