So I've been playing neverwinter for about a week, yesterday I hit lvl 60.
When I was in a dungeon and an epic (purple item) dropped and I needed it (it was devoted cleric, which I am) he went total ape-**** on me. He said you may never need on purples, always greed.
Also something about, that GWF and HR purple's are more expensive, and that was the reason not to need.
Yes and no.
There is some etiquette about need/greed rolls in dungeon, but unless the group negotiated that during the run and everyone agreed upon it, your party shouldn't have been surprised. If it's an immediate upgrade and something you're actually going to USE then a need vote on it is legit in my book (others may disagree). Now, if you're just going to sell it, then yes, you did something unfair/rude.
The best way to not be rude is to negotiate need/greed roll terms at the start of a run. If that doesn't happen, try to observe how everyone else is voting and follow their lead. Commonly, purple items are 'greed'd and all else is 'need'd (and you can always just 'pass' on junk) but that's not anything official or a rule or anything, just generally established etiquette.
Many people do "greed runs" where everyone rolls greed on valuable drops, but if your group didn't decide that's what they were doing then there's nothing wrong with needing on something you can use. If you're not going to equip a piece of gear then rolling need is considered rude (this is true across most games).

You acted in your rights unless it was a 'Greed Run.' In which case you unknowningly made a mistake.
Normally, you can gracefully 'need' on any item that you intend to use on your current character. Anyone wanting to do anything other than that needs to make an agreement with his teammates before-hand. That is how it is intended to function. People tend to make their own rules as suits them, though. Comes down to honor, I guess. If you needed on an item you were not intending to use, just because it was your class, then yeah that was kinda wrong.
Search for other threads on need/greed. There are tons, and they are all 6 miles long. Hahaha

If you were told it was a greed run, then you did wrong. If you weren't told, then you didn't. A brand new 60 shouldn't really be doing greed runs.
I second what's been said here. Pug (Pick up game/group AKA random groups) runs are notorious for this. My guild's rules in CN are NEED everything, Greed on Draco drop -- this is because all the loot drops other than Draco's are non-specific for classes, so everyone will be able to vote Need. This removes all question as to what to do. On all other DDs, the rules is need everything except boss gear drops.
However, individual parties frequently have other rules (Greed Only for example).
What I tell my members is this: When you start out a pug, ask what the need/greed rule is. If no one answers (which happens a lot), Need everything and forget it. If the party decides on a rule, follow it and pay attention on the first boss drop to see if everyone else follows it. If they don't - all bets are off, Need everything (don't freak out - that just makes you look like a brat). The most important thing to remember is -- you cannot go into a PUG run and expect any of your team mates to follow any agreement or etiquette, so when a pug mate NEEDS on that Ancient Icon or whatever, it's sort of par for the course - one more reason you should be running with a quality guild rather than wasting your time with a PUG. There's no reason to rage over it. It's like jumping in the water then getting angry that your hair got wet.
Almost all PUG groups are not interested in carrying a stranger. They are not interested in having their time, energy and resources wasted on gearing up a random stranger who they probably will not see again. They are here for one thing: to farm and profit. That is why they want everyone to greed on all epics.
If you are more interested in gearing up (which you clearly do), I suggest either bring it up at the start of the party, or better yet, join an active guild with officers who care about the progression of their members and other folks in the guild who are in the same boat as you are. Farm and progress with your guildmates

Well, me and 2 friends of mine made the party. We said nothing about a greed run, nor was it mentioned.
Also note that some drops like in mc/vt are bop where if you intend to use it at all, it's a waste to not need on it. BoP seems to be becoming the norm too unfortunately.
Did you take a look at what this person Rolled?
Were they confused and actually Rolled Greed or just pissed off that they lost the opportunity to be the only one in the whole Group who Rolled Need? Because we ALL have run into that (#@&^$ at least once in our Pugging Lives.

i actually find it funny when cleric purples drop so rarely. other classes actually have a decent shot of getting their own class purple except for maybe hunters i think. in fact, i make more money on my rogue than my cleric simply because the loot system is more in a rogue's favor. guardians/gwf's have the most weight in the loot system i think.

So did I do anything wrong??
PUG = need unless specified.
You did nothing wrong if nothing was actually said about loot.
Typically I try to clarify at the start if is a greed run. If the dungeon drops something specific you know are going to "need" for your character state that at the beginning and no one will be surprised. If something randomly drops during a greed run that your character could use during a "Greed" run say so, and most players will trade with you.

Just establish before you even que for the dungeon if it's a need or greed run, or if specific items are either. I was in a group today where a guy asked us to NOT pick up loot until after all monsters were dead since "I am so used to hitting need on everything".
: purses lips in a frowny face:
I believe the leader of the party can adjust the settings to establish need or greed rolls only BEFORE you get into any dungeon. There's always the option to be nice, and Pass on items too.

Greed is something CW's do cause they run around in packs of 3+. To make the odds better for them they make up a greed rule and make everyone think its normal. If you are the only type on that mission its yours, case closed..
On top of that you started the group you should of made the rule "everything belongs to me"

Correct.
Its best to clarify at the beginning what type of looting rule it is. Its usually 1 sentence.
all the time i see this happen, que up and join random group on epic, no one says any thing about it being a greed run, then the sec some one needs on an epic drop, at least one or 2 people get butthurt because they assume it was greed run. then start kicking or trying to vote kick those that needed.
if all epic runs are greed runs, what is the point of the loot system?
i think if you want a greed run then go form up a party for a greed run and agree to that. don't randomly que up and assume its a greed run. and if you and some friends or guildies are gona greed and are short one or two , at least let the pugs that join know, don't wait for them to neeed and then kick them because you failed to let them know and got all butthurt.
Please don't post in "dead" threads (threads in which more than 30 days have elapsed since the last post). Kelemvor has a problem with smelly zombied thread.

Well, then it was your group and your rules. And the guy was just an idiot.
Then you're fine. There were no rules set beforehand, so all options are on the table.
I guess that extra person thought it was a PUG group
