So once a leaver happens, and it's still happening quite frequently the team is left 4-5. I don't feel this is 'fair' and either you need to establish a method by which another player can join the preexisting battle, or you need to make it so that the debuff for leaving after the first person leaves doesn't effect the rest of the party.
Your matchmaking system only works if people play through the entire fight, if you keep sticking me with bad groups who are just going to quit I'm going to just quit also. Either that or there needs to be an incentive to the losing team to stay fighting.

There is a fail safe in case two leave. 4v5 is hard but doable and as time goes on the leavers will be pushed down the Eli ladder. Give it time.

Can you confirm that, leaving a PVP match does indeed go against the matchmaking system not just game losses? And any way you can go into details on the fail safe?

If 2 leave, the remaining 3 can leave without a penalty.

4-5 it's hard but doable? Uhmmm.. No. 4-5 is most likely a loss and not even fun and amusing for those who stay. Whenever one person quits I just quit too, and since I got the debuff.. Well.. I close the game and go play something else. Either that or campfire sit.

4 on 5 is quite doable if your team actually tries instead of just giving up because you think you've already lost.
I've never been a frequent PvPer, but I have also never lost a 4 on 5 match.

i was in a 5 vs 4 match earlier and i decided to be nice and let them have a 4 vs 4 for fairness. eventually, my team got pushed back but the other team couldn't make up for the 500-600 point lead so we still won.

The only times I've gone in with guild premades have been full teams where obviously nobody is going to leave unless accidentally disconnected.
Bear in mind that I said I'm an infrequent PvPer (I mean really infrequent), particularly at level 60. It's quite possible that those full teams of 5 against my pug of 4 were all really terrible players, inexperienced, just there for dailies... dunno.
Another consistent factor in these matches is being left shorthanded prior to anyone even scoring. One time I recall someone bailed because another player was disconnected, but the three remaining stuck it out and the DCed player was able to get back into the match (pre-bug, as this was some time back), which we won.
I understand that PvP while levelling is a very different animal than PvP at level 60, so I'll step aside. But I do believe that you certainly can't win if you don't even try.

That sounds rather hard to believe, unless you are in a premade team of 4 with superb gear/enchants.
4v5 is extremely hard to over-come, especially given that the person who left typically does so because their team was doing badly.
