I haven't played in... a long time. Before I left, I was often topping the damage charts with the old meta GF offensive build (free gearscore from blockometer yay), but see very little besides negative posts on GF now.
Has GFs role changed since beta? Is it still correct to run DPS or have there been nerfs to the tree, or what should I respec to? All help is appreciated

GF's have replaced GWFs as the priars of Neverwinter PvE.
Current state of GF is not so good. But in near future the class will receive the long waited and deserved BUFF which included Encounter boost and rework , cooldowns droped and not to forget Much more aggro generating mechanics. So if u wanna re-start your GF ..now would be the most perfect time.
Thanks for the replies, was afraid of that. I see the stalwart set lost its insane bonus, so I guess it's time to work on timeless (after I get all this artifact/boon stuff) or is there a new BIS armor that's easier to get?

That depends on the way you play it...
...with all the boon and artifact stuff you are actually more free to a-locate some other stats with different gear combinations so basicly its up to you to build your GF

Other than the stalwart set nerf GFs haven't changed at all.
The rest of the game has.
From your post it seems you left before the stalwart nerf which was around the time of official release before feywild. Here's a summation of the meta changes:
1. TR single target damage was nerfed repeatedly making them less desirable in groups other than stealth shortcuts.
2. CW HV set bug which led to stacking CWs and those CWs focusing on AOE dmg with control as a side effect second to damage.
3. HV fixed but the predominance of multiple CW groups led developers to nerf CW control abilities, resulting in groups desiring even more CWs to fill in the gaps.
4. Mod 1 boons and gs bloat makes it easier for even the squishiest of classes to survive well enough in pve obsoleting the need for a "tank".
5. more control nerfs to CWs and bug fixes which actually increase CW aoe dmg. yet more reliance on multiple CW groups.
6. Mod 2 releases add boons, artifacts, companion bonuses which allows any class to not only survive, but "tank" pve. Also HR but who cares.
7. GWF buffs mainly deep gash and atwill dmg buffs allows the avg GWF to actually to compete for a spot in a group. Previously in mod 1 only high end GWFs who used animation cancel WMS could compete for dmg with CWs.
8. CWs continued focus on AOE dmg at the cost of the now weakened control, leaves holes were someone needs to take hits, GWF steps up into this role as it has great synergy with CWs and unlike other classes actually deals more damage the more he is hit rather than losing dmg trying to "tank".
9. present time.
10. GFs are getting a buff soon. hopefully with Mod 3 and its pvp focus & tenacity stuff it allows them to seperate pvp and pve balance and give some damage/abilities back to trs, gfs, and hrs.
I'm still not sure that the upcoming changes to GF are going to make that much of a difference. Glad to see some shortened animations and increasing number of marked critters with enforced threat, but the damage potential for the GF is still way below most other classes. Considering that in this game CC and AOE damage is king, without changes to the game that reduce CC, the GF will still be the low man on the totem pole.
I've been doing pretty well in PvP with my GF. Even in kind of crummy gear. My problem is that I feel like a wet kleenex in PvE. I suspect that's partially due to pugging, since I generally end up with the most damage/kills in dungeons, which might be an indication that other people aren't pulling their weight.
Just build Pure DPS as your GF and you are fine 2k+ ARP and Crit is essential the rest is power. But you still need to prove your worth to other PT members do this by always holding threat and doing as much damage as possible, We still out DPS GWF in single target but no as much as we used to we need more GF's to go full DPS it is what the game is about DPS or your not viable to the group. Only the DC can be valuable to the group and not do damage.
