The AH is overburdened enough.
It submits/retrieves search data so many extra times it takes me a couple of minutes to get to the actual search I want.
For example....
- Click Category --- search/result 30sec
- Click Type within category --- search/result 30sec
- Click Sort by expiration -- FINALLY the search/result desired.
The first 2 search/results are worthless net traffic from EVERYONE using the AH.
Submit search on Search Button, or Sort column ONLY.

You've got no control over it -- It's the way Cryptic automatically searches on every single thing you click which is pathetic.

Actually, no - that part they got right -- results are paginated so client/server doesn't have to send the entire 1,000+ result items to the client - it only sends a "page" worth - 30 or so.

Allow us to set up our search terms, the type of item we're searching for, and the sort order, and only then search based on our criteria after clicking search.
It's so annoying when you finally get your search criteria setup, only to get the "Too many recent searches, you must wait X number of seconds." because it searches every time you click on a sort order. And that's even when the AH isn't lagging (rare lately).
As well... there should be disqualifiers in the search terms... if I want to search for "plaguefire" enchants, but don't wish to see a bunch of clutter like "lesser plaguefire" in the results... I should be able to search for "plaguefire -lesser" to filter out all the garbage "lesser" items. (not to say Lesser Plaguefire enchants are garbage... just that they're clutter when that's not what you're looking for)
it maxes at 400. how many more bytes is 400 results vs 30? probably less than the PE zone spammers create every second
many items don't even have 400 listings, or even 100. doing a new db req for such a simple thing the client can do in .00001 microseconds is beyond incompetent.

While that alone would reduce the query rate on the database significantly, I think it should go even further:
1) Disable "instant" queries whereby people type something in and click "search" as bioshrike suggested
2) Disable "instant" query click results when simply expanding a tree
3) Require a minimum number of characters... Similar to the forum's /10char
As a IT geek who deals with Oracle/MS/MySQL/PostGRE DB's on a daily basis, I can clearly see the laziness being invoked by consumers when looking for items. Put simply: "You Can't Fix Stupid" and must take measure to at least reduce its effects.
A SQL query goes into a bar, walks up between two tables and asks: "May I join you?"
While they're at it, fix some items not coming up in their correct categories. For instance, HR blades are listed in the main hand category, and nothing comes up in the off-hand category. For TRs, off-hand-only daggers should be listed there, too.
Also, set the results to be YOUR level only, unless the player specifically chooses higher or lower level items.
Another - break profession lists into assets and resources. If an asset or resource can be used in 2 professions, it should be cross-listed in the results for both. For instance, anvils can be used for weaponsmithing, but only come up in platesmithing searches.
Yet another issue - standardize namings - there are talismans that are wizard offhands, and there are neck items with 'talisman' in their names.

Well. This. What else is there to say? Knowing cryptic we won't see any major overhaul to any mechanics in the game. But this should be easy enough. Why search before I have clicked a category? And why would it sort after the highest buyout, that is stupid as hell. Change these two small things and It will be less laggy, and even if it does nothing to the lag, it will still make it faster to search!
What I really want fixed up though is that when I look for something the Default is always the highest price. Then I have to click the price column twice to see the lowest because the Highest one just bloody refreshes.
It is also basically impossible to even know what Armor or Weapon specific Enchantments are there unless you type in shard and then transfer one of the names there into the search tab and do a search to even see the properties. (Please I should not have to go to a web site offside to see what they are - so please do not give me suggestions - I know, I know)

to nerf bots? Still tarded and also to be able to lock the buyout as a default to show the lowest price first should be an option!
Engage! Another thing is... Why when I change characters do I still see his search info entered, should that not be cleared everytime I close the main AH window?
I also agree this is creating unnecessary lag in AH and possibly server wide?
Kinda feels like a cab ride where the driver takes off before you even close the door or tell him where to go...not to mention putting on your seatbelt!
^This. Very good idea. Would save on calls to the server. Not having to send info of every item in a category to the player.
Same problem. I have reported it but have yet to see a response.
