Apologize up front if this has been asked/answered many times before, but is there a "best" way to unlock this profession slot? Meaning, a recipe that uses the least amount of high value resources that can get you the Level 3 result? Obviously you would need the highest levels of tools for that profession, but assuming you have the right tools in the right profession (whichever it may be) - what is considered the easiest/best way to try and unlock this profession slot? It is the only one I have left to unlock.
All of the professions have their generate basic ingredients and do a higher level task. Leadership and Alchemy I find can be the fastest route. Alchemy can be a HAMSTER shoot based on the RNG for dropping your recipe needed to level up but leadership is a consistent time to level drive.

Leadership doesn't have any tasks with rank 3 results.
The way I did it was, I attempted to do a rare lower-level task that consumed something like an arcane crystal, or an eldritch crystal (not as valuable as something like a dragon egg) as soon as I had the crafting assets available to me that would yield me any probability greater than zero of earning the rank 3 result. In my case, I just barely had enough quality to have something like a 4% probability of getting the rank 3 result. And then I just spammed that task. Had many failures of course, but all it takes is one success to unlock the slot.
Edit: Yeah it would have to be a profession other than leadership.
You need, at a minimum, 1 purple and 3 blue tools of the appropriate profession to have a chance at a tier 3 result (4% in that case.) Adding more purple tools will increase the chances to a maximum of 60% chance of a tier 3 result.

Right now artificing or weaponsmithing are the best choices since the assets are less expensive atm. Level 11 or 12 if I remember correctly will sometimes offer a task that has 3 levels.

Alchemy has tasks that work for this, that you can do at profession level 3 (making 10 little potions at a time) - with the caveat that such tasks aren't always available, as I think someone above already said. But, when you have a lot of alts, I liked it because you don't need to have the profession at a high level at all (lvl 3 or 4 alchemy is easy to do) and don't need any special items for it, just the blue/green vit. thingies you make yourself.
Of course, as others mentioned, you still have to have the assets for it to work at all. I found 2 purple and 2 blues to give around 28% chance or thereabouts, which = a fairly decent chance. eg, typically within 3-6 tries, altho once it took more like 14. :P You just keep mailing one set of assets to any chr. who wants to unlock the slot.

I did the same thing in Aritficing, but waited until I had 3 Mithral and 1 Steel tools (44% chance) plus the Eldrich Crystal. My results are on the Auction for a couple more days. + 3 Symbol.

I do mine with alchemy. I was able to acquire a full set of mithral alchemy tools (by upgrading from iron/steel ones) during the last Lillend promotion. My chance of success is 44% with those plus an extra steel crucible, and I can choose to make any batch of potions or dyes without consuming rare resources. It usually takes a few tries, but always produces something useful.
Crucibles are particularly cheap as they are a shared asset with artificing. It's just nice to have one of everything because it allows flexibility with the required tool asset for a task. Three mithral crucibles, and choice of both a steel mortar and philosopher's stone would give me the same odds.
I have to figure this out every time I level up a new character. The problem I have is the slot description uses the wrong term. "Rank 3" should really say "Tier 3". I like to complete it using the Black Ice profession and you can use the level 1 Catalytic Processing Raw Black Ice task. I have enough high quality black ice tools to reach a 20% probability of achieving Tier 3 results. And since you need to process tons of Raw Black Ice you will get the tier 3 result long before you have processed all the black ice you need. Then you can continue to use the tools you collect to process black ice faster.

Well now that you told everyone the prices will go up. Fool!
Rank 3 is all you need to get a chance on rare task that can unlock the slot.

...Alchmey is the way fastest way, thanks to the tiered (ranked) result rare tasks starting in AlchLvl 3...
Drawbacks: The purple Mithral Assets are somewhat expensive on the AH, because it's unfortunately one of two crafting Professions that still can produce useful stuff. You can after the unlock still resell them via the AH and get most of your investment back, and/or pass them to your other chars to perform that unlocking ritual there.
It might, however, be cheaper to just do that wth another Profession, as few people reall want the purple Mithral Assets for these - cheapest should be Weaponsmithing and/or Artificing. There's simply no use in crafting stuff there. So you might get your puples for a wee few AD, they still are in the game, and still drop from Lockboxes, too. The drawback here is that you'd have to level an otherwise (currently) useless profession up to Lvl 6 or 8 to get to accessing ranked crafting tasks.
Intermediate: Go for the suitable Armorcraft - Letherworking, Platesmithing,... ...only useful thing to craft there is Underwear with a hole ("Gemmed"), and it's useful only in endgame levels (that is Lvl 25 crafting), but the chance to generate Rank 3 results begins a lort earlier, and you can still use the Mithral tools later on, and get them at somewhat moderate prices...
TL;DR: - Fast and comfy: Alchemy. - Cheap, but only good for that unlock: Weaponsmithing / Artificing - Moderately useful later on, and mid-pricey: Armorcrafting.
