Do companions cheapen the (group) experience?

So far getting to mid/high 20s I have found that they are not really needed for the "golden path", the only path in this game it seems, for the regular quests.

When I get into skirmish/dungeon delves, it seems like we are running with maybe 7 or more people instead of 5.

It seems even a player cleric for healing is redundant with these people.

With EQ II when you use a merc it takes a group slot, and you can at least control them somewhat, telling them to back off/attack/protect me/protect yourself.

Wait till you get up to around the mid 30s. The NPC start getting harder then.

    Group play -
You'll be facing lots of red circles that do very nasty stuff. Your companion just loves to stand in this stuff. Only problem is, they don't stay standing in it very long and end up dead.

Sorry this might deviate from the topic a little, but will we ever get to unbind companions ever again?

You would get a better and faster response making your own thread.

I doubt it - I thought I read a post by a Dev saying that they now feel unbinding isn't the correct route for the game.

Don't worry your companion is not living long enough to cheap anything expecially if he is a devoted cleric. I really like her suicide run;)

Nope, it's a whole new ballgame once you start fighting stuff that one-shots your companions. The healing they provide will, at best, be useful outside of combat.
