hi there. I was playing NW this morning, on my laptop, later I couldn't find NW on my desktop so I started to download it again. My question is this, can I find the previous version which is already downloaded? is it possible?

Absolutely! Look for a folder, usually in C:\Program Files\Cryptic\Neverwinter, (or something similar). You should be able to launch the game from there by running the .exe. I just copy the entire folder over if I need to reformat or such - saves a bunch of time.

Well, it's a series of files and subfolders, but the main program is called 'neverwinter.exe'

found something but it just says patching and is stalled, sigh
Is your computer using a firewall? Try adding a rule to allow neverwinter.exe through. What you're describing is usually the launcher trying to connect to the patch server.

Windows Vista and later, IIRC, by default, has an option enabled called "Hide extensions for known file types". You'd have to go into view options and disable that, or switch to a detail view, where you can have 'type' as a column.
