Please explain lava timers to me?

I'm trying to make a simple timer... I want a "flash" of fire effect.

So what I've done is put a one-mob encounter on a bridge over a lake of lava. The 'fire' is supposed to go away when the encounter is complete... but nothing happens. It never goes away.

Is this just a function of the foundry, where lava doesn't kill in the foundry? or what's the deal? Any help would be great, please.

Not a lot of effects do damage, and even those only do generally small amounts of damage to players, not necessarily mobs.

Your best bet for timers is having mobs spawn over a bottomless pit in an isolated room. The DM Studio quest shows you exactly how to do it.

It tells you how to do it, but how do you have a bottomless pit?

Another option is to place a long hallway just outside of your play area and use the one way patrol point to have one mob walk up to the other (guard encouter) if you have the right balance you can adjust the length of the patrol point to set the timer.

    Oh, this could work! Thanks!

"Bottomless pit" doesn't necessarily work, it depends on the rooms used.
The "caves" rooms all have a "deathplane" at y=-81, I'm unsure what other rooms have deathplanes.
