I was searching for professions materials in the AH, and noticed many, many stacks of 999 of the same item by the same people. Seems unlikely that one person would have 10000 of the same ingredient.

Actually, sounds legit. Its the same as any game with an in-game auction house, if you apply real life trade banking techniques then you can make an in-game fortune. it doesn't really affect the game economics at all.
Basically, quest till LvL20, selling absolutely everything you get (bar the essential weapons and minimal Armour for YOUR charicter), then you should have enough in-game cash to start trading a living on the AH.
Spot the AH to get a good idea of popular wanted items (items in demand by other players), then search for those items. Sooner or later you'll hit a jackpot of those items being sold by players who just want shot of them or players who don't know there worth (just like real trade banking ), you buy as many as you can at the low price, Then you sell them all at a fair reasonable profit, and start the process all over again.
Eventually you'll be turning over 1000+ items at a time But this of course takes days.
Guilds have banker players who purely play the game this way as bankers, to make the guild in-game money for PVP/PVE items for the other guild members.

Its normal, and healthy Guild practice.
I believe what the OP is referring to is stacks of 999 of RARE items like Arcane Shards and Crystals. Both of these items are hard enough to come by in game, and probably the same amount that is currently active in the game is what THIS ONE PERSON is selling ALONE. It is very unlikely, with the very young age of the game, that ONE PERSON has accumulated these material through legitimate game play, or by working the AH as you suggest, especially with character names ending in ".com"

This assures that the report gets to the right teams and doesn't get disseminated through the official forums.
