2013 mmo and only one person is allowed to zone at a time at the gate. If some idiot just open the map and stare all day, everyone is stuck waiting for him.
Huh? I've never had this happen. Infact often times I zone at the same time as like 5 other people in prime time.
Though portals seem to work just like the chests, only one person can view/open a chest at a time, portals seem to work the same way. Now that sounds like more of what you are talking about.

Ah, so that explains what happened in the graveyard zone when I was there a few weeks ago. The door stopped sparkling and everyone was standing there dumbfounded. I finally just changed instances, but this seems to cover why it was happening.
Oh dear God! If this is true, then somebody please delete this post. No offense OP, but you've just handed griefers a nice way of making everybody's life miserable.

Yea its funny... if you open up a gate to port to a location then go AFK you can zone lock everyone. Someone did that to me one and I couldn't leave for 20 minutes. Awesome feature... for trolls that is.

I ran into this yesterday and got trapped. Another should of found it bug that his game is full of. I love the action combat, but the imbalances and mistakes these companies make is insane.
If someone is keeping the zone-gate in use (I've seen it happen too), you can switch to another instance, and that gate's likely to be available, or at least not blocked for long.
now we just need a greifing guild with as many members as instances

Yeah this is pretty stupid.
Not as bad as having to wait at a chest that you can't open til everyone rolls on their loot tho. Usually end up just skipping chests instead of waiting around for them.

It exists to ensure that players in the same party load into the same instance. If players click to load zones at the same time the game wouldn't know which instance to place each person in.
However the disable only lasts around 5-10 seconds at most and is afterwards no longer present for a period of time I believe.

It lasts until they let go of the door. All you need to do to lock out an entire zone is get your guild together in the Tower district, move one person to each door in each instance, and hold on to em. No way for anyone to get out besides using teleport scrolls.

It would be a pretty poor way to grief people.

It's pretty lame.
