Hello,
While servers are down, I figured Id open a thread about how Neverwinter feels one month in from the perspective of a player who has only played subscription mmos. Leveling a Guardian Fighter to 60 and my first encounter with the Zen/AD currencie system.
The road to 60:
Was a blast, I found the pace of increasing monster difficulty well desingned and implemented for the most part. I realy like the way monsters: flank/cc/specials, all of that is so fun. I mainly did quests and loved it, the pace, the no-nonsense, the sparkly trail of ''its that way''. My free-time is precious, and I happily gave it to this game for the past month.
Guardian Fighter:
I had a great time soloing, things don't go down that fast, but you don't either: fair trade. Many things do feel very ''off'', especialy in terms of the power level of my abilities: it feels like either its very strong or bordeline useless. Sadly there just isnt that many abilities that are simply good.
Also, is there a reason why sometimes I hit shift to block, I see my character in blocking stance, but then, he doesnt block? Its happened too often for me to think of it as a ''fluke''...
My role in the team:
After hitting 60, I figured it was time to start learning the ropes of group content. First stop: Skirmish: Aberrant something, something:
So group content: I put the skills that look tanky: the aoe taunt, the wall of swords daily, the tunnel of blasting things of their feet, etc. Im pumped, I can't wait to hit shift and put ''Xs'' everywhere, lets go! Well, ahem, wtf, ok.
So I don't have to tank trash mobs, people are mostly doing their own thing surviving fine. At least we aren't splitting dps. Surely, Ill tank the boss, and then Ill be usefull...
The Beholder fight:
Our group completely failed on this: I tried my best to be of use, figured Ill try to keep boss on me, put my mark thing on hit. And started to tank, only to have agro taken in an eyeblink by a 3 feet tall halfling teleporting in the air and flashing and slashing about. Ok, ok, so tanks aren't supposed the main boss, ooooh, maybe thats why there always seem to be so many adds. Well then, Ill tank all the adds since miniblade is doing alright with the flying eyeball. The adds come in a frantic rush, they glare at the healer for a second and then jump at him with all fangs/claws/brains out... But Im there, a pixelated wall of metal, between our beloved cleric and a living version of the Underdark monster manual. I hit my wall of sword, then my aoe taunt, hit shift and brace of impact:
splat.
just splat. thats what happened to me. I splated... bad.
Which actually led me to want to write this thread. I would love to hear from some1 more knowledgeable then me as to what is expected of a Guardian Fighter during a boss fight.
Zen/AD/money: perspective from a sane person.
As I mentionned earlier, this is my first foray into the strange universe of F2P gaming. Its just incredibly bizarre to me, a consumer who would have gladly bought this game and payed to play it. For the most part, the cash store seems strange but fair in a way. There is one glaring exception to this: the right to re-specialise your character.
From what I could glance, this seems to be the one place where playing the game and paying the game intertwine. Allow me to explain: when I play a class, one of the things I love is trying new ways of playing it. When I change spec for a character, its not a one time deal. I try, I explore, I try again, changing a point here a skill there. I like to brew and discover new synergies, new ways of playing my class. And that for me is a crucial part of the game that gets to take my free time away from me. But with this system of 6$ per, it would mean probly 18$ to 30$ everytime I want to try something new: errr no, just... no.
I would gladly pay a subscription just for the right to pay my respec with gold or a sane amount of AD instead of what you propose. And honnestly, this simple fact is all that is stopping from actually buying stuff from your store. I refuse to pay money every time I want to try out sword slash instead of slash of swords.
The proposition:
A daily respec pass: gives you unlimited respec for 24hrs.
Subscription option: have you considered that possibility going forward?
Wow, that was alot of letters. I guess its telling that I took one hour to write this. You have something here, it just feels that you are on the fence between a mainstream game of quality and some sort of half baked Korean cash grab. I understand that the latter was how PWE became a strong company, but if you wish to appeal to a broader audience, your offer will to be well, broader...
ty, for your time reading and consideration, I would love to read other people adding to The proposition, anything that would make this game more fun and accessible.

We are just going to get another DPS OP class that can tank better than you can. Not one class should be able to tank better than any fighter in D&D.
