So currently, it is free to slot items and train companions, despite it saying it will cost an arm and a leg worth of diamonds to do so. I am hoping this is a design feature because the current formula for cost is severly broken.
Some suggestions, actually one. Cut the AD cost for services by 1/10th. So something that says 39356 now would say 3936. Much more reasonable and in line witht he earning progression in game.
Do you mean the cost to speed up the training? If so just train them before you goto bed.
Yeah, I meant speed up training. The way I saw it, it seemed like it wanted it for training period.
Slotting and unslotting is the main cost issue I am looking at. But the fact that you don't get charged for slotting is a bug, and when it gets fixed you get double dinged.
I know the purpose is to make $ through zen. however, they can make a lot more by doing something like cutting the cost down a bit on services to entice people to get AD faster via $ instead of any other means. Same with keys; make them a very rare drop.
There is no cost to slotting. If you read the text, it is warning you how much it will cost to unslot if you choose to do so in the future.
"Participation in PVP-related activities is so low on an hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly basis that we could in fact just completely take it out of STO and it would not impact the overall number of people [who] log in to the game and play in any significant way." -Gozer, Cryptic PvP Dev

Don't slot in things that you are not prepared to pay to remove, otherwise you can slot straight over the top of it for no cost but you loose what was originally in the slot.
YOU DO NOT GET CHARGED WHEN SLOTTING AN ITEM.... READ!! it says if you wish to recover the enchant it will cost you X amount of AD.... nothing about charging you to enchant it first.

No, it says it will cost diamonds to unslot things. Removing them costs, replacing them by adding a new enchant costs nothing but you do lose the original.
Training companions is free unless you pay to speed up their training to get it finished early.
What they should have is the option to over-write enchants, destroying the old one to put in a new one, instead of charging you tens of thousands of AD to take out an enchant before putting in a new one. When I was leveling, I used some runes on my companion that were fairly cheap low-level ones, thinking that I could just overwrite them to add better runes later, but then I found out that's not how it works.

Um, I thought this was actually exactly how it does work. Or am I imagining things?
Yes you can just drag new stuff on top of old stuff free. Ive been doing it since beta 1. also sometimes you can right click on the slot in question and it will show all the gems you have that qualify for said slot, even if said stones are in your bank.
I typically don't ever unslot/speed tings up things I get plenty of runestones/enchantments absolutely free. the only rreason to ever unslot something is is you somehow got an uber rare enchantment and need to move it to another pet/armour but if that's the cast the cost to unslot should be < buying a new one on the AH. Be sure to check the AH before unslotting ANYTHING.
Often you can buy runestones/enchantments VERY VERY cheap. if not the level you one try one level down or one level up! sometimes you can buy 10 level 3 enchancments for the price of one level 4. or vice versa it often surprizes me that greens are often more expencive than blues because people try to use them to upgrade or just get the blue from a coffier. check the price on coffiers also typically a coffier is about 2x the price of the stones inside but ever so often it reverses if a lot of people are opening lockboxes.

Pretty much this.

It didn't work like that last time I tried. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.
Can a third party please confirm this either way?

edit: And yes, the text IS misleading.
