You're talking about the offhand or what? Sometimes I can't equip weapons unless I drag them from inventory to the slot I want them on. Try that out and see if it doesn't work. You should have that starting dagger equipped for no more than 20 min and found something better at that point.

early on almost any dagger should be main/off hand at 60 look for the one that doesn't have the purple enchantment slot , those slots indicate a main hand weapon.

if you just double-click or right-click equip a dagger (or ring) it'll just replace the "main" one... to replace the OFF HAND dagger (or Ring) you have to actually drag a new dagger/ring into that slot. The comparison tooltips also do not reflect the off hand dagger/ring, by the way. You have to manually compare a new ring/dagger to the off hand ring/dagger
As you level up, when you upgrade your mainhand, put the old main into your offhand slot every time.
At high levels, the blue and purple daggers are too often mainhand only, but by then you should be able to figure something out.
