As the title says - it's about the only thing that's interesting me with NW, so any word on when Ranger releases?

There are like 5 threads about this a day.

No we don't have anything on when the next class will be out.

But expect Warlock and Ranger to be the first two.

LOL, keep dreaming - druids aren't even in the players handbook.

Hm... When/if we get Druid/Ranger, I wonder if they'll get their animal companions (this was a pretty big disappointment of mine with DDO). I haven't gotten too high level yet so I don't know how good/bad companion AI is, but hopefully it's good enough that we might get some classes built around pets. I'm thinking something like a Druid with lots of summoned monsters, or a Necromancer focused Wizard.

It's been said by Cryptic/PWE that the next coming class is Ranger and heavy mention of Warlocks being after that.

Oh man, please oh please don't make Ranger a pet-dependent class ala GW2. Pet AI never works and is always a source of pain.

Honestly I don't know how it works in 4e. Hopefully the animal buddies are just little boosts or something and not an actual part of our damage output. That would be a terrible disappointment.

Rangers don't have Animal companions in 4'th edition, not sure about druids since I only have the core handbook.

I'm not too familiar with 4th either, but a pet generally IS a part of the Ranger class. It's one of the things that sets them apart from a bow/dual wielding fighter or paladin. I don't think I have much of a preference in exactly how important the animal companion is, but I'd hope it exists at all.

edit: Didn't see the above post before replying. Guess that settles that :p

Beastmaster Ranger does have a pet. It is a build option from the Martial Power book. Druid Has a Summoner build but its pets are temporary. And before we argue that both those builds are not from the core book neither is the CW power Storm Pillar. It comes from the Arcane Power book. Just an example to show Cryptic is willing to pull from source books outside of the core books.

The main pet class is Shaman. they get spirit pets and one build I think gives them a kind of nature elemental thing.

Pets work differently in 4E than they did in the previous games. Pets in 4E are more of an extension of you. You use your actions to direct them and your powers make it so your pet does a thing.

Pet is NOT generally a part of ranger class - only Salvatore and his fanboys made a big thing of this. Ranger is almost always a nature-focused hybrid striker(meaning melee/ranged with some nature spells). Pets were never a core component of ranger.

Rangers are what will force Rogues out of dungeons along with GF and GWF.

Mark my words it will be DC, CW, and Rangers all the way all the time. ^_-

Yup, I can see that happening.

I hope they release classes and such in blocks and not just one at a time. One at a time you end up seeing a huge flood of that one thing. At least with a few new things you might see a variety.

    http://www.d20srd.org/srd/classes/ranger.htm#animalCompanion
    Animal Companion (Ex)

At 4th level, a ranger gains an animal companion selected from the following list: badger, camel, dire rat, dog, riding dog, eagle, hawk, horse (light or heavy), owl, pony, snake (Small or Medium viper), or wolf. If the campaign takes place wholly or partly in an aquatic environment, the following creatures may be added to the ranger’s list of options: manta ray, porpoise, Medium shark, and squid. This animal is a loyal companion that accompanies the ranger on his adventures as appropriate for its kind.

This ability functions like the druid ability of the same name, except that the ranger’s effective druid level is one-half his ranger level. A ranger may select from the alternative lists of animal companions just as a druid can, though again his effective druid level is half his ranger level. Like a druid, a ranger cannot select an alternative animal if the choice would reduce his effective druid level below 1st.

3.0 and 3.5 dnd. In AD&D, they had followers, which could be exotic animals.

Pets have *always* been a feature of the ranger class.

The Beastmaster Ranger build option is presented in the "Martial Power" supplement book. It details various pets you can have along with the new powers associated with the new build option.

That may well be true but the Ranger class as such don't get an animal companion like it used to.

I GET that, the core ranger class no longer gets one though like it did in previous editions.
