So I noticed under Leadership this morning I had a rare option to "Gather AD," 8 hours for 400 crystals.
Farther down the list is "Protect the Caravan," 2 hours for 200 crystals, 100 copper and XP.
What if you are going to be busy (say going to bed?) for the next eight hours, and unable to re-queue another task? Then the longer task pay off will be better.
Now, if a player wakes up every hour on the hour to re-queue their crafting tasks, then two things are evident. Firstly, they will get the best payoffs from their work. And secondly, they should really evaluate their sleep habits and priorities. And maybe seek medical attention.

I don't know about leadership, but i know the other crafting professions that have rares have a chance for a greater result, sometimes from putting higher quality workers/items in there, or just chance. I've heard, but don't know for sure, that leadership is the same. If you do a rare, there is a chance what you see as the reward isn't all you can get, with the higher the level of leadership, the better the odds.

The profession system is designed to reward people who are active. They want people logging in every 10min or 1 hour to do tasks, not queue up a bunch of stuff and come back 8 hours later.
Personally i think some of it is a bit insane (10 min to mine ore, 10 min more to refine it, 25 min to craft armor and than if you want to get a bonus another crafting is a bit much).
I queued three workers on the 2 hour task but I see your point. It makes sense to do the longer task if you only have one.
Or if you aren't going to be, as I noted earlier, able to change them for a time. Every night when I go to bed, I queue up four tasks that each take eight hours. So I can complete four eight hour tasks in that eight hour period, which pay off say 2000 AD plus XP and some copper, rather than the four one hour tasks which would only net me 800 AD plus XP.

Leadership is the most broken of the professions in this regard. The rewards for time spent for the "rare" "recipes" is very low compared to the standard actions and this is true to at least past level 10 leadership if not deeper (not sure yet, about to hit 11).
The others, the rare recipes are pretty good: you get a lot of profession xp and a quality item for an hour or so of time spent. Leadership you get twice the rewards for 4x the time spent.
That said, sleeping on 3 of the gather AD quests on the double weekend, waking up to that, was a winner.
Yea I tend to use the short term ones and long term ones depending on how often I can access the gateway/game. I think it's designed pretty well, actually.
With 1, 2, maybe even 3 characters, the 2h tasks are fine. Once you get to 5, 10 or 15+ characters, those 18h tasks suddenly become a lot more appealing.
