I suggest a Dwarf. Preferably female.

I think for a healer, human or dwarf might be good, as both are really highly defensive.

Trust me, as a healer, you tank more mobs than a tank more often than not. You want some defensive stats, which both humans and dwarfs offer.

It doesn't seem to make a great difference in this game, all races are going to be within ~5% of each other at end-game, probably less than that.

That having been said for a Cleric the min-max race is probably human due to the three extra heroic feats which means you can max Divinity and Cleanse Feats and the extra defense which is good because right now with the insane amount of healing aggro you will have to tank more mobs than the Guardian Fighter's....

Human is pretty much the best choice for everything.

    Except maybe Half-orc for Rogue.

    But the differences aren't huge.

I thought half-elves looked pretty solid for clerics.

The only thing the half elves and elves look like is Michael Jackson.

That they do! Even the female ones....

I think mconosleep is right about all the races being pretty close to each other. The human might be the best choice due to the 3% defense and the extra heroic points, but I rolled a Half-Elf and have no complaints. It probably won't make a big difference what you pick, more go for what's cool :3

that being said I wish halflings were better for other classes.. they're so cute looking!

Humans with their extra defense and additional feats are always going to be a very solid choice, but I wouldn't say they were the best race for every class. Certainly, Tiefling's with their +5% damage to enemies under 50% health are massively under-rated, and Drow with their fairy fire are a good choice for many classes too.

In fact I would say that humans are probably the clear best racial choice only for a DC.
Tieflings are probably better than humans for CW.
Half-Orcs and Tieflings are at least as good as Humans for TRs
Half-Orcs and Tieflings are competitive with Humans for GWF.

Haven't played a GF, but I heard that Human or Dwarfs are good choices there.

Humans because you get 3 more feat points, that to me is huge.

3 more before the paragon feats. some classes the 3 extra don't make as much difference as the stat and racial bonuses. Tieflings by far the best cw in my opinion, dwarfs I think are better gf, several better for tr.

Does anybody have any calculations to back up any of these assertions?

yeah there's a lot of them if you go to the class build section and look at the builds you will find some. The CW I think has info on the teifling vs. the human 3 feats if I recall correctly.

Detailed calculations are tricky because many feats aren't working properly. Still for a rough back-of-the-envelope try you can note that:

    i) Each extra point in a stat gives +1% in a relevant derived attribute.
ii) The Tieflings's 5% bonus damage to enemies under 50% represents an average 2.5% damage increase.
iii) The Half-Orcs crit gives 5% additional critical damage (so goes from 1.75 to 1.8 I think) , which unless you have ~87% crit chance is going to be less than the Tielfling's bonus.
iv) Humans get a +3% defence bonus and 3 additional heroic feats.

If a class benefits from at least one of the starting attribute bonus for Half-Orc or Tielfing then they are going to be competitive with a Human for DPS. If, as with a CW or TR, the class benefits form both bonus attributes then they are likely to be clearly better than a human for DPS. Defensively a Human is going to be better, but if you going for DPS Half-Orc and Tielfing are frequently superior.

I do my GF after Envys guide at the moment and as a Human i can put 3 heroic points in Grit or potent challenge if i wanted to but i did take Grit, Human also get 3% more defense which is nice.

Some would say yes, my advice is this.... Log into the game, make a random toon of the chosen class. Then press C and look at each stat, look what it does, and decide what you want to make. Healer, damage ect... as i found out on my CW, its actually WISDOM not intelligence makes my CC stronger... thus i needed wisdom and intelligence over cha, now a dps CW would probably go Int and Cha as its more dps oriented.

Does race matter? its like a 1% differance... i dont think it matters as much as some might want to make you think...ONLY race might actually matter are humans...who apparently get extra feat points...which may be OP... i dont know for sure though. But i always say play whats fun, and dont be a clone =3

I'm sure race makes some minor difference, but I'm equally sure I'm not going to make it effect my own choice. I'm currently playing two characters, a Half-Elf Cleric, and a Wood Elf Great Weapon Fighter. These are not by any stretch the "ideal races" for those classes. They are however the ones I like, and want to play. Therefore that's what I'm doing.

I like playing with the less used options. Like the Half-orc crit cleric, or the DPS high charisma Halfling CW. As far as the advantages.... minimal at end game, so it really boils down to personal chioce.
