Can I make a friendly NPC defend himself in combat?

I want my follower npc to assist the player in battle, not just cower. Is there anyway to do this? I can't seem to make it work...

    No. Only Guard-faction (friendly-to-player) NPCs will fight against other enemy mobs. You could take one of those and dress him up as your NPC, but yes, they can be killed.

    Dang. It seems awkward that they don't fight back...
