When you select the option to change the appearance of an item, you can either use dye or drag an item of the same type into the slot. What happens if the to-be-copied item is dyed? Are the custom colors transferred to the to-be-modified item? (This would make buying the dyes more attractive.)
Things don't un-dye when you do that (who would buy dye remover from the zen store if it did? :P )
but.. some things can be dyed, but cannot be used to copy the model onto another item, so check carefully before dying an object you plan to copy in the future.
Let's say I have a Robe of Most Beautiful Colours +5 that I have dyed with very pretty but expensive colors. Now I have gotten a new robe, which looks like it came from a mass production factory. If I use the dyed robe as a "source", will be new robe get the custom colors of the old robe? Or just the skin, but not the colors?

IIRC, if you use a dyed item as a new appearance source, the dyes are included.

you cannot use the model of an item, dyed or not, to change it to a new item IF the two items are exactly the same (tried with 2 pairs of crafted pants which were the same, quality stat and name wise)
you cannot transfer only the dye of an item to a new item <-guess this is untrue now
EDIT:correction, if your original item is dyed and you put on it a new 'skin' it will keep the dye even with the new skin (at least that's what happened with my shield)
Just tried this with my multitude of crafted pants as well, and it is true.
I dyed a pair of green quality pants, and then replaced it with the model of a pair of white quality pants, which were the same model, and even though the preview did not show the dye transfering, after going ahead with the model change, my new pair of pants remained dyed
you CAN transfer the model, dyed or not, of an item to a new item, if those two items are different, even if the models are largely the same (for example I dyed a pair of pants black, and every new pair of upgrade pants i get, i just transfer the old dyed pair's model to the new one)
also note that as far as I can tell, unique item model items dropped by the boss at the end of quest instances (not dungeons) don't let you transfer the item model to a new item, and I don't think items bought with seals allow it either, but you can dye these.

yep, they transfer over as they are now part of the 'skin'

Just a heads up that I learned the hard way about using another item's appearance and/or colors... once you use that item's looks it is destroyed so you cannot re-use it when you get different gear with better stats.

odd..i wasn't able to change the appearance of my higher level helm to the pirate helm that i got from that one dungeon. it said that it wasn't the same kind of item even though they both said that they were head items.

I keep getting the same problem I'm not in game but just thought of something, did you try just dragging and dropping into the appearance box rather then trying to see if there was a item you could use??

Thank you for testing this! I had hoped it would be possible to only transfer the dye, but it makes sense that it's the whole item that gets copied.
I think I'll stick to outfits then.
I know if I get a totally new look, then i will have too, but for now I don't :P
And thank you for testing this out!!!
And just to add, Dye prices Zen and AD Auction House are WAY TO HIGH!!!
