I am one of the first members in Neverwinter. I participated in the closed beta, since the begining. I had pre-purchased torchlight II and successfully joined the closed-beta and contributed in the forums. I now (a bit late) joined the open beta to have even more hours of fun, this time with my friends. My friends however do not have any beta keys. Don't you think it would be appropriate if us, the old closed beta members, could be given a few extra beta keys (2-3) to give away to our friends, or invite them to the game? I personally have 2 friends that have long waited for the open beta, and like in raiderz, i thought i could provide them with the keys. Can you somehow help me out? I hope it's not much to ask.

all they have to do is make a PW account or if they have one log into it and download the game...

. . . . . We're in Open Beta now. All anyone who wants to play NWO has to do is sign up for a PWE Account and the Download, Install and play! If you already are a PWE Member, all you need to do is Download and Play! Please remeber, NWO is a Free to Play game. Even when OB is over, the game will still be accessible to anyone with a valid PWE Account, free of charge.
Don't let the "Open Beta" thing fool you, this game is live.
Anyone can make an account, nothing will be wiped, you can buy stuff from Zen.
Basically all "Open Beta" means is the game isn't entirely ready, but they want money. So play the game, but if you have a problem, -bleep- you, it's beta.
How would the term open beta fool anyone? Is the word "open" somehow hard to understand?
Open Beta in most North American games refers to a state that the game is pre-release and they are looking to test load and server architecture as well as various other game mechanics. It used to be called a "Stress Test" before that, and I'm sure it's name will change again before long. The key difference though is that almost entirely, North American games that are in "Open Beta" it is a test only phase. As in all features to be tested are available, at no cost, to either a limited number or the entirety of the public. At the end of this phase the game is wiped to 0 and the game goes "Gold", then they actually start charging money for it.
This is the disconnect most people are having.
No. That was 5+ years ago. Open beta has been synonymous with soft release for many years now, for the majority of online games.
Guild Wars 2 - Open Beta had my definition.
SWTOR - Open Beta had my definition.
Almost any MMO released to North American public, even recently, has had my definition of, "Open Beta".
To get back on topic, and also alluding to what I said earlier, not everyone has time to play every single online game that comes out, and therefore do not keep up with these obscure naming conventions. OP had a legitimate question, and Riven, you pounced on him as if he was stupid, and now this is just degenerating into a flame-fest over semantics.

Can we get zebular in here?
not really, all you would have to do is read the first sticky under news "Neverwinter Open Beta is now live. Log in and play now!
Neverwinter Open Beta is now live and available for all players! Are you ready to log in and explore the Forgotten Realms?
What are you most excited about? Leave us a comment and we'll see you in game!" to know all players can play now, OP didn't ask "what does open beta mean?" OP just assumed their friends couldn't play.

There will be no wipe. There is no "end" to this "phase." Thus, the game is live.

Neither of those games had Open Beta, they had "Beta Weekends". I don't necessarily agree that the definition has changed just because a few FTP games (this one and Path of Exile are the only ones I'm personally aware of) have altered it to mean "soft release" but the last real Open Beta I've seen from an MMO that launched was...like WOW. Many years ago.

maybe not everyone plays video games all day and keeps up with obscure terminology?
just maybe
"Open" is a perfectly normal word, no? And it has no different meaning here. Thanks for playing.

GW2 didn't have an open beta, it had short, individual open beta events.

No, they were called open beta weekends. Short, individual events.
As you should.
