Level 9 atm with a GF, and block hasn't reduced the damage I take from anything yet. Just wondering if it's a bug, or if it doesn't kick in till later.
What little I played of the GF tonight, the block worked for me. It shows a damage number but I never receive the damage; I believe it is showing what is mitigated just the numbers appears to be damage.
Since it is not working for you, it sounds like a bug.
I guess I wasn't paying attention; I tried blocking when I logged back in and it seemed to work fine.

i actually came here to check this, at 4 does not seem to be working like last beta. I still see damage and does not seem to do what it normally did with no damage numbers coming up.

ok just checked again, the numbers are coming up but the damage is not taking so block is working. I like the pop up to see how much damage you are mitigating but they need to change the number to a different color....like blue of something for mitigated damage

The starter shield apparently has such terrible stats that it doesn't really block.
However at level ~23 you can block 4k damage hits decently.

It's blocking, it's just a bit confusing on how it works and took me a sec to catch on. You will still see the red damage number fly but it's pulled from your block meter instead of your hit points. The only cue you get to indicating you successfully blocked or not [other then the fact you didn't actually lose any health pool] is you will see "Resisted" pop up in the fly text.
It's actually an awesome system. Think of Guardian Fighter having two health pools. One that's your traditional health pool and a secondary shield pool. If you don't ever block damage is done to your primary pool like anyone else. If you do block all damage is diverted to your shield pool, till that's empty, then starts going into your primary pool. It really makes your defense active and interesting instead of passive, like World of Warcraft for example, where a partial block is done automatically on a percentage basis. Very cool mechanic, and very powerful if used correctly.

PS: You can block with the starter shield every bit as well as with an end game shield. Shields only offer +AC and stats. The actual act of blocking is 100% I]assuming you have the shield pool for it[/I and doesn't take into account what kinda shield you're using.

It's a binary block or not blocked.
