I remember when they first announced it as a MORPG (Massively Online RPG) before it got bought by PW and became a full fledged MMORPG, I just cant remember when! I was just curious how long now has it been in development? Cryptic has a bad rep of releasing games too quickly and them being launched bug ridden content dry disappointments until a further three years of updates are made to them. Usually by then the damage is already done. This, however, they seem to be taking their time with and may be their first real successful launch.
So pleas take note Cryptic, DONT RUSH, people are happy to wait as long as the product is worth waiting for in the end.
Here's Hoping.

First announced on August 23, 2010. I'd suppose some time in development by them but how much... who knows?
I know it was before the Turbine's lawsuit with Atari and was likely one of the major factors to go into a lawsuite with them. Some time in 2009, from http://kotaku.com/5346251/turbine-rolls-for-damages-in-atari-lawsuit
"The timing syncs up right: in December 2008, Atari bought Cryptic and we heard a report in June 2009 from The Cut Scene that they was working on an MMO of Neverwinter Nights."

I started following it in September, shortly after announcement. It was being developed side by side with others when it was announced - as in old Podcast by one of the dev (who left the project 2 years ago). However I hated Atari and didnt trust the game. So I joined them in December(?) last year when PWE bought them - in 2011 I think?

i agree if you dont have enough content to keep the crowd entertained in the long run they will run away in droves seriously as an example another PWE game Raiderz pvp theres a bit of improvements to be made there but my point was that the game was released in what everyone believes was a hurry there are soo many exploits people have been doing and weve been at the lvl cap of 35 for like 3 months now without any new content except for 1 new boss which even PWE said that it wasnt supposed tobe in there and they didnt know the company had put it in there all in all it brought some people back but once they fought it and beat it they left right away within like 2 days s: just dont hurry and make sure you guys have some content backlogged or something so we dont just die of old age waiting for new content but this is why the foundary has me sooo interested if done right has the potential to make us have seemingly infinite content

This game started development sometime in early 2008 most likely. Atari bought Cryptic specifically because of this game (or at least it was one of the reasons). However it wasn't a DnD game at that time (they didn't have the licence), but a generic fantasy game with a foundry.

The Foundry is a good way of having free content added to the game while leaving the devs the time to work on other stuff... including more content (for the game and Foundry). I'm not saying that they should release the game while lacking content "because Foundry", but content/level rushers will have to wait less for some extra content (quality may vary though).

"Champions Online is slated for a 2009 launch, while a Star Trek MMO will follow in 2010 and an as-yet-unannounced game will be released in 2011."
The as-yet-unannounced game was the predecessor of Neverwinter.
