Hiya everyone, I am SoulSalute. Obviously.
I am a long time fan of all things RPG. As a kid, I grew up playing various games such as Warcraft (the series), Neverwinter nights, and Prince of quin. Those games are still my favorite. And once I found out what created all of these awesome games, I immediately had to try it. And that's how I started my lifetime career of playing and GMing DnD. After this I expanded the RPGs that I play, and slowly grew my variety of games. From Doom 3 to Dungeon Keeper, I have a vast collection of games.

However, by -far- my favorite game is still the same. The one that started it all for me, Neverwinter Nights. I was a -HUGE- fan of the game, owning every expansion, and later all of NwN 2. I have been playing on Neverwinter Nights servers my entire life, only now stopping after Gamespy pulled the plug. And as soon as I started crying about that, I immediately found out that my favorite game was being continued. So here I am, very hopeful that this game will live up to it's name.

Now, I admit.. i'm skeptical. When I first heard of this, my first response was "It's not the same company? It's not a party-style 3rd person RPG? Nah, it won't be good." But despite, I checked it out anyways. And after looking around, my hope for this game has been renewed. I think this game has very good possibilities. And if it lives up to the Neverwinter name, it just might become my new favorite game.

So I hope to soon see everyone in-game when the game is released! (Or sooner, should I get a Beta key)
Thanks for reading!

*Thinks if he should break a heart...*
*decides to soften the blow first*

The dev team is mainly PnP players and WotC is closely involved with production of the game too. So this game will be canon for D&D and also, it will have as much correct D&D stuff as possible (like how monsters actually appear, what they actually eat, what they actually say while attacking, what is their actual eyecolor - ALL ACTUAL REFERRING TO WHAT WotC BELIEVES THEM TO BE) and correct lore, like history and stuff.

Also foundry is designed to facilitate the way DM runs a PnP campaign.

*ok, I have softened it enough*

But this game is not NWN3. Yes, it is based in the same city and is official - but is as related to NWN as it is to BG. The story of BG will also be history of NW, and so will the story of NWN. It is not a part or continuation of NWN series, however.

    *putting band-aid after the blow*
But it is canon and a great story is going on behind the scenes. There is an Aribeth like betrayer in the midst of new NPCs and there are some very nice stories too...

Yeah, I know, what I really worry about is just how much are they going to follow core rules & the 3rd edition ruleset, like NwN. I kind of hate it when MMOs (And all RPGs really) go off and make their own ruleset.. Because, honestly, the DND rulesets are simply the best. (4th edition excluded, I hate it.) I mean, the Forgotten Realms is a universe created -FOR- the DnD games, so going off the rulesets would be just stupid in my opinion. And I glanced over the info they had on the races.. And just from those stats, I facepalmed >.>. But hey, i guess I shouldn't worry too much about it, they might have changes for the better. I hope.

Secondly, I'm going to be annoyed if this game does what all Free-to-play MMOs do, and force you to spend real money, or you will suck.

But all and all, those are my only two big worries with this game. the lore sounds fine, all in all. I don't want to sound like i'm complaining, because there's no end to my gratefulness to the developers for actually continuing the name of the best game series (IMO).

PS: There I go crying again :,(... You just had to mention Aribeth! *Weeps in a corner*

It is based on 4e, and so far, very true to it.

That's quite disappointing... But I suppose I shouldn't loose faith. From what I've been told, 4e is far better for video games then tabletop (Like 3e.) Again, not trying to be rude.. Just not at all used to 4e. I'm staying faithful.

Think of a very tough problem. To solve that problem, you write 5000 lines of text. Now someone comes with a very similar problem but it is easier than before. You have to go through all 5000 lines of text. - That is 3e.

Now think of the same problem given to someone else. He draws a big diagramatical representation of problem. It is a large diagram with 5000 boxes linked with each other by lines. Now someone comes with a very similar problem but it is easier than before. He just use the circles in a small portion of that diagram, ignoring all the rest. That way problem is solved very quickly. - That is 4e.

Now a person with very very complex problem comes, both 4e and 3e take a lot of time solving the problem - but both solve it.

However, to many people who see 3e going through all that technical jagron which did not concern them when they went to it for their easier problem impresses them.

Having played both 3e and 4e, that is what I believe it all is in a nutshell.

But yes, 4e has more balanced classes than 3e - also maximization and minimization problem does not exist in 4e (and if it appears is quite easy to deal with without breaking the ruleset itself)

EDIT: Also, in 3e, I was able to DM a campaign after 1 year of playing. In 4e I still can't even when it has been more than a year. The main reason being that in 3e everything is written in lines - all scripted and you don't really have to do much. In 4e however, you need to improvise constantly and have your own interpretation of things like alignment, worship etc.

    Hello and welcome!

As for the rules, well, I personally think that the rules have always been the least important part of Dungeons and Dragons. I think the story, setting, and characters (both mine and the DMs) have always been more important. I think Cryptic can achieve that.

As an added bonus I think the 4e ruleset plays much nicer in a video game setting than 3e, especially for one using real-time combat in stead of turn based.

That certainly doesn't mean I'm not without skepticism, but the rules translations are honestly the least of my worries.

Hi there and welcome to Neverwinter! I'm that guy they keep referring to about the New User's FAQ. I'm glad we have so many NWN people both from the Bioware game and from when it was on AOL!

Of course, nothing stirs up players like mentioning what edition is best. I have the opportunity to now have played them all (but to be honest I believed a lot of the negative hype and was kicking and screaming into 4E and ended up very surprised and still play it today years later!)

Whether 4E was made to make into video games or to attract the generation that played MMO's I'll leave up to the sages.

What I can say about the game is it is BASED on 4E, so the things that just don't work when you translate a tabletop into an MMO game are given permission to redo by WotC.

But it's real time (and not action that's turn based sped up with no pausing to look like real time.) So, a lot of the D&D table rules can't be directly translated as the NWN was done whether you used the pause feature or not. There will be differences (just look at the discussions in the targeting reticle. And yes folks, if you don't have line of sight which is made by your reticle, you can't fire magic missile.) So apologies in advance if it's not the NWN 3 game some expect.

Without the above mentioned earlier restrictions, they can work on the game so it plays fairly instead of having to tweak the rules all the time. So that...ahem...Monty Hall escalation of attacks and glancing blows won't happen in this game like a silly Turbine... prop. Yeah, talking symbolically about a game comparing it to a fast propeller :)

Seriously though, I can say the proposed lore in the game is unbelievable. There were things about the chasm and Plaguescarred that actually made me have to look up lore and I learned a few things I missed before! They are dedicated gamers who take the preservation of the story-line of D&D very seriously, and that (in my opinion) is one of the top most important things to D&D.

And the option of making our own stories in the Foundry without learning coding or development is a serious plus for me since I never really learned how to do the Aurora tool-set and its high learning curve. What time I got with the Foundry demo I can say that won't be a problem when its tested and I try and making my own mods.

But what is most important beyond all that this having a dedicated group of players supporting each other to make this game fun. For that I thank you in advance. I got a feeling you'll be doing that very well.

So again, welcome to Neverwinter, and we all hope to see you playing with us when they release the beta soon!

Thanks everyone, and sorry for bringing that up. I guess I shouldn't judge something I don't know anything about.

I have one quick question, if I may. I can't quite find this anything about this.

When beta is released, how does one get a beta key? Is is randomly given? I've seen some mentions of Torchlight 2 giving a beta key, do you have to purchase that to get a key? Thanks.

The promotions and contests will be mentioned once beta is closer to launching.
