I think there will be only one server ( at least at the start).

If you have a look in this thread, @iamtruthseeker outlines how servers are handled in a fairly detailed way. I suspect this will answer your question, but if it doesn't, post back what it doesn't answer. It's likely that if not in that FAQ, it's information that is not yet available.

    Hope this helps

PS: Search for the word "server" within that thread to find it quickly

To answer the other part of the question, however, there are some regions PWE blocks from access. It stinks, but they've got to protect their network, too. However, Germany isn't one of the blocked ones, so no worries for you.

Usually PWE divides their servers into regions (So there will be a North America East/West server, a Europe French server, a Europe German server, a Europe English server....)

Just to quickly point out the key portion of Truth's FAQ:
Can you tell me how the Game World (or Server) will work then with player population?

Updated 10/05/2012: Cryptic uses one game server per game. This means, Cryptic makes a unified "world server" to play on composed of a bunch of physical computer servers to make one "game world." So no other "PvP Servers" or "Role Playing Servers" are done as separate servers to log into. This also means that User Generated Content via the integrated Foundry tool (and more on that is mentioned in the Foundry section) also is accessed by the same NPCs and objects in the "world Server."

There's been no discussion if there will be alternate servers for Non-English Players but I would assume not. The game likely has a different install option for different languages and filter UGC into different language groups rather than differentiating servers.
Remember while PWE does have their stake in Cryptic this game still remains, primarily, a Cryptic Studios Project. Champions Online and Star Trek Online both sport a single server architecture.

Most of this information came from this post by Stormshade.

There should be a China Server a North American Server and last I checked, not another server for the rest. However I might be wrong on a European server.

While testing is in effect, there will be only one Universal Server (except for China's internal testing, but for them only due to access restrictions internationally in regards to PWE allowed/restricted access.) Software will translate into the selected language for the one downloaded and selected at install. UGC content has been explained as the above post.

I am not certain if so, but last I checked, I do not think the chat language is translated to the client language on the user's end but could be wrong there.

I think that if PW want to go big on NvN there will be EU servers. I don't see this as a any kind of problem for company like PW.

No point assuming an Aussie server to be released =/

Cryptic have already indicated that there won't be multiple servers, except where legal reasons compel it (notably China).

    It's one big server, gang!

IIRC, Russia is also getting a separate localization of the game, with its own server. That was back in August though, might've changed since then.

Otherwise, I think the word is that everyone will be on one big server. If your country is one of the exceptions, I believe you would've run into that back when you registered your PWE account.

My understanding so far is that you won't get to choose your server. If there's a specific server for your country/whatever then that's what you'll log into.

They want you to log in to the game and not have to worry about "My friends play on <server>" or meeting people outside of the game and being unable to play with them.
We'll all be one big happy family on one visible server as long as we don't live in China or any other legally separated country.

Just to point out though, there will be dozens to hundreds of actual servers around the world. Australia will likely have a server or two dedicated to that region a European Server is basically guaranteed but those servers will be tied in to a master server through which we will all be linked. Cryptic is going to use a Single Server Architecture which can be translated to 'many servers which appear as one.'

This article might gives some insight into how the system will work although I believe the system Cryptic uses has some key differences.
In any case we, as players, will only see one server to log into regardless of our location. There could be hundreds of servers behind the scenes but we will all be on the same world and interacting with people all over the world regardless of which server we *automatically* connect to.
