Then again, it did state it is closing down, so maybe refugees is the right word. No matter what, you're welcome here and I'm glad you've joined us!
Just as a heads up, the DEFINITIVE CoH Wiki is over at cohtitan... paragonwiki.com. I dont think wikipedia is the best source for up to date info.
Cryptic initially developed City of Heroes, but they sold their half to NC Soft back in 2007. Paragon Studios (staffed largely by former Cryptic employees) has been developing City for the last five years. One of our beloved, BaBs (also known as Chris, IIRC) is developing over here, which is the only reason I knew Neverwinter was being developed into an MMO.
I, too, am a refugee from City. I am heartbroken, but I still hold hope that we'll convince NC Soft to sell the IP, and that we can perhaps find a buyer. (I bought a powerball ticket yesterday too... just in case.) There may also be other methods of Saving our City, but we shall see.
If none of those pan out, if I find myself unable to play in my beloved City, I may be making my way over here. Certainly no other game would ever entice me, but I played AD&D, D&D 3.0 & 3.5, Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate 2, Icewind Dale, Icewind Dale 2, Neverwinter Nights, and NWN 2, and have recently bought the whole shebang as a boxed set. I have not played DDO or D&D 4.0, but I love D&D and the BG/NWN franchises, so if anything, this is the game that could tempt me.
I do have some questions though, since City was my first (and largely only) MMO. (I dabbled in GW and WoW for maybe a sum total of two hours. Not for me.)
- Will alts be allowed? (How many characters can we create per account?)
- How does teaming work? (Can I team with people who are higher/lower level than I am? Is there a side-kick/exemplar system? Is it easy to find teams? Do I have to stick with the same group all the time?)
- Can other players steal gear that you buy with real money? Can they steal anything from you period? (If anything that I bought with real money can be stolen, this is a deal breaker. I don't think any rational company would do this, but I am apparently not the best judge of what is "rational" by corporate standards.)
I know these questions may not be answerable until down the line, but they will definitely affect whether or not I play the game. I hope gnomes and bards are released later too.
Anyway. Yeah. Heartbroken about my beloved City, holding out hope that we can save it, but making alternate plans just in case. Because I cover my bases.
Most people from City probably know me as kwsapphire (my global), but may also know me as Sapphire7 from the forums. (Couldn't also use kwsapphire as my forum name over there, otherwise I would have!) I am known for obsessively tracking my toons in excel, posting stats and maps and walkthroughs on my site, and keeping a calendar of events in city of heroes. (see my site.) City has been my passion for 8 years; goodness knows that passion is going to need something to fill the void come December. (Assuming we can't save our City.) Hmm, still need to update my calendar with the latest news, but I can't bring myself to do it ... yet.
I am a member of the Repeat Offenders, a group of people who love teaming together, and who find creative ways to break video games. (I am playing buff/debuff for sure if I come over here.. hopefully there are like-minded people over here!) My free time is largely limited to Friday nights, but I jump online when I can otherwise.

Neverwinter is made with the same engine as Champions Online and Star Trek Online (both also developed by Cryptic), so I can give a few answers based on this, and from what I've seen in videos.
Yes, you can alt, possibly several alts, and possibly with options to buy more character slots.
Teaming will likely allow 4-5 players to team up, level likely won't matter in forming the team, but I'm certain it will affect the experience gain and such. As this is a very different sort of game from either STO or CO, I do not know how the leveling up and down to other team members will work out, but if they can find a way to implement it right, I am sure it will be in there. I can't say for certain if it will or will not be in.
As for stealing from other players, I very, very highly doubt it, as this would be so abused it's not even funny. Games are there for people to have fun, not for people to get trolled and griefed.
If you'd like to sample what the game might feel like, both CO and STO, as I said, are built on the same engine. But while this is true, keep in mind they are also very, very different in most ways. Neverwinter will have a more action-based feel to it. Star Trek Online has a gameplay mode you can use that makes it more in line with this, where you can play in a third person 'shooter' game style.
To really know the answers to the question would take someone with far more knowledge than I have, I can offer only my thoughts, based on both past experiences with Cryptic, and with what I have seen and heard in videos and articles.

Your insights were very accurate. I'm holding off on answers until they mention it in an interview or show what advances they have done on the Cryptic engine. What things I could gleam I have (and will post when discovered) in the Neverwinter New Users FAQ.
And my hopes to those who fight for CoX but my condolences if it cannot be saved.

Welcome to Neverwinter gameboy432.
CoX is made by the same company that is making this game, so "refugees" may not be the best of words, maybe "something new?"

Anyone know of any CoH Architects that have done Foundry Quests yet?
