Costume slots

One thing that I'd really like to see are costume slots similar to how it is done in Lord of the Rings Online. You could put a costume item in a costume slot and have it show on your avatar instead of the regular item, while still keeping the stats of the regular item. This way you could make your character look how you want without having to swap out things all the time.

I agree completely. There is nothing worse than having a great piece of armor with awesome stats that you feel forced to wear but makes you look like some clown. Of course it would be great if there were so many good looking pieces with good stats that were easily attained that we won't need to worry but there is just no way they will be able to please a lot of peoples tastes. Best to just go the costume route.

Not playing CO at the moment, but know STO does have two costume or clothing tailored slots as well as the option to not have items show up on your when equipped. This is good news potentially for costuming in this game.

I imagine that costumes will work similar to STO. We will probably get one costume which is comprised of armor we buy from vendors or loot drops from dungeons, and some casual clothing to wear (something you expect people to wear in the tavern after a long day of goblin slaying).

I've never heard of this in a game before (I don't play CO or STO), but what a brilliant idea in terms of a visual appearance. And so, is this the sort of thing that will likely be for sale in the in-game Cryptic Store? If I pay for it, I'll look cooler? Because I can see people paying for some cool cosmetic changes. And if the costume doesn't have any in-game bonuses attached to it, or change how we perform in-game, in any way, then I say, brilliant!

I've said my opinion on this in a similar thread not too long ago. I also really like LotRO's Cosmetic Outfit System and hope that there is a system in place in Neverwinter to compare and give a great level of gear appearance customization. As long as a customization system is purely fluff, having no game balance impact, then I truly hope for a great outfit system. Indeed.

Now, DDO's system is one that I hope to never see emulated again. Horrible it is, in my opinion. Which has suprised me, seeing how it is also a Turbine game and they did such a great job on the Outfit System in LotRO, then they turn around and release the monstrosity that is DDO's system.

I also love the customization of STO and CO, I just do not think that their system would apply too well to a D&D universe. Mayhaps it can, time will tell.

Just for clarification Dungeons and Dragons Online by Turbine came out before Lord of the Rings Online which means all the appearance mistakes had to be learned from DDO (as well as what worked,) and why (IMHO) they got it better in LotRO. I too feel the DDO appearance is...garish at best when it comes to "costumes and customization." You'd better luck out how you make your character look because who knows how the items you have to equip will turn out making you look?

I also feel both free and premium options for costumes would be an excellent way Neverwinter could generate interest and revenue. Instead of (simply) "formal wear," perhaps we could have things like "royal wear" or "ballroom outfits" or a whole variant of themes like this? So instead of a PvP zone, you could make a D-A-N-C-E one :)

Okay, maybe no "Zones of Footloose," but costuming would be an excellent aesthetic that could help Neverwinter cosmetically.

    ...

New DDO has costumes too. It also has a trial room. I haven't played it since before but from screenshots and vids I can see them wearing dresses and stuff.
Many other games have costume things too - Rusty Hearts for example.

As vanity woould be their source of revenue, I believe that devs would have implemented something like that.

Missed that option in DDO's revision since my return visits. Good to know! Still horrible looking forced "mods" on wearing equipment though.

Even D3 has Dyes at least. So I think you'll at least be able to dye your stuff.

I don't really know why the ability to change the colors of items went away for a while. It's been a fun and great way to customize your experience since UO and Dark Age.

Agree with a number of others.
CP, STO and all the PW games have loads of costume fluff.
Most every F2P game has loads of costume fluff.
I fully expect NW will have cotume fluff. Some at launch with lots more to come.
