Normal Essence Vs Awakened Essence? (Watcher)

Hi people, can someone please answer this for me... I have looked all over Google and official Neverwinter wikis but can't find a thing about it.
What is the difference between the usual essence you use to call the boss in ME's for the Watcher run, and the 'awakened' essence? A group of us did a watcher run, killed the boss and amongst the loot there was an awakened essence, I am wanting to know what the difference is between the two pls. Ty.

When doing ME with 3 runes and you encouter the shadow, you can give him one normal essence to summon corresponding watcher boss. If you manage to kill him, you get an awakened essence, which is used to upgrade succcessor gear.
