Flying Dragon world, just a suggestion....

conrozconroz Member Posts: 2 Arc User
Dear Neverwinter, thanks for this great game I am playing for years.
Almost everything is complete in Neverwinter, (we have boats now)! thanks you for that!
The only thing I miss are flying mounts like dragons in a new world, just a suggestion :-)) Hope someday we can fly in a new world!

Greetings from Holland!
Elisabeth.

    Greetings Holland,

    I agree with your opinion, back in October they introduced "Flying Carpets". I questioned the image they posted of it flying above the city here in this thread. I was informed back then, it only floated and only the legendary (orange) mount allowed for 2 players to ride one. After opening a lock box and getting one myself, I chose to donate it to my guild. It is a Gliding Carpet and not a Flying Carpet.

    Many years ago they made it for their game Champions, so why not here?

    I am told it is impossible here in Neverwinter. I can still fly around in Cryptic's Champions just not here.

    Love what you did with the tulips! Have fun <3

    I believe it has alot to do with the way they have made the maps in this game. Just like when you try to move near a structure that one builds inside a stronghold. Notice it has an invisable wall around it. While I love the idea I am not very sure they can take that much time to go back and put into place all that would be needed to make this happen.

    Thank you all for the reply! The tulps are beautiful in Holland!

    Well, I hope they develop a new world with flying dragons, the boats are already here so why not :-)) only in one world :-)

    Have a nice sunday 2 you all!

    Hi @conroz ! The environmental work required to adapt to a flying mount isn't something we have the bandwidth for at this time but we know it's a popular request. We try to never say never to any feature (that fits within the Far Realms theme) though!

    Well... aside from starships, STO introduced the ability for characters to fly by giving players jetpacks, or floaters as they are called in game.

    I guess it would be similar to the the kyacks we got in Sea of Moving Ice, and can use in Shoshenstar River.

    But, the jet packs in STO only worked on one "specific" map... namely the map for STO's summer event.
    And players have been asking for years!!!! STO's summer event with them started about 4 or 5 years ago.

    And one of the graphic artists in the game, i dont even know if he's still at Cryptic, said that to recon them into older maps was a huge undertaking.

    This is all geek speak to me. All I know, I can fly around PE in free cam mode in Foundry. I don't see it breaking anything, other than I can get to the Protector's Garden without the key. I believe that could be fixed with inviso walls. Boundaries of the city could just bring up the travel map as they do when you leave your penthouse by flight in Champions.

    Anyone that desires to check other maps, you can record a demo, and use the playback and free cam option to tour the map.
    Simplistic instructions are;
    1. While in game use chat function: /demorecord mydemo
    2. Then stop the recording: /demorecordstop
    3. EXIT THE GAME
    4. run demo by;
    5. GameClient.exe -demoplay Mydemo.demo
    ---Edit---

    Sorry forgot to mention this;
    Once your demo starts hit the pause button then F2 (activates free cam mode) use RMB and mouse to point your camera and W,A,S,D to move around.

    Several games did introduce flying late in their lifecycle. It was a worthwhile undertaking, as the players loved it.

    The way it was usually done was to permit flying in all new maps going forward, and update old maps for flying as time permitted or not. Also flying usually was made available only at max level so the levelling experience would be unchanged with no opportunity to skip content.

    That approach should work for NW too.

    I highly recommend adding flying to the game, it is mass fun.

    Has Cryptic ran the numbers of what it would cost to increase the bandwith of late ? And how much it might make off of doing so ? Not only would this provide a new revenue stream for the flying mounts but it would also increase the game play reducing players lag that many report only seeing that effect while using this game. Happier players pay more money , just sayin.

    I personally do not feel that any of the maps in Neverwinter are large enough to warrant flying. If it were an open world game such as WoW or LOTRO, I could see it, but it's not.

    Well of the Dragons is very large and open. I flew around in that area and it was pretty cool. Some maps are small and would be silly to fly about in their confines. The problem lately, as I see it, they introduce flying mounts (manticores, flying carpets, giant beetles, and griffons) with lock boxes and they don't fly at all or just skim across the surface of the map. When they introduce these winged mounts, it is like offering you a dirt bike and then telling you not to do stunts.

    People were and still are very critical about the original Guild Wars not having mounts at all. But just like this game, once you visited any place you could fast travel to the location by traveling on the world map. The difference is they never introduced any mount to the players that was meant to fly, we never got horses in Guild Wars, so there was very few players asking why we couldn't fly in the game. They planned to add mounts late in the game but never did, because they realized it would break the game.

    I believe the word "bandwidth" is code or slang for workload / budget and has nothing to do with network speed.

    IIRC that is called 'no-clip zone'

    Imagine a map the size of or bigger than SOMI and have your own 'rented' flying mount. by rented i mean that to get anywhere in the land you need to go to a stable or something and rent the mount from there. Then you can fly around in the map. If you make a map similar to the floating pirate isles and something like that awesome scene in Avatar movie, it will be great. There are plenty of flying mounts possible. Better, make it a realm of dragons and you can ride the metallic dragons to fight the chromatic ones as they are trying to resurrect tiamat in their realm or something.

    Guilds Wars 2 that long said it couldn't... and many players expected it wouldn't- now has mounts. More so they move you in 5 different styles of movement. Though you are referring to GW1 here I assume.

    I remember way back when yee olde City of Heroes kept saying "We can't change how the powers looks as they are "hard baked" into the programming." Yet just a few years before the end of that game's lifespan they did figure it out and mostly all the powers could have their "look" cosmetically altered.

    Sometimes Devs say such things and at the time may believe it true- maybe it just takes a Dev "task force" or a single one's epiphany to get to the core of something and "Unbake" it from the system. Sometimes I'm sure it is true a thing cannot be changed... then I guess, your outta luck.

    For example with another much loved Cryptic game- I still hope someday my KDF toons in Star Trek Online will be able to team up on purpose with Fed aligned friends in general missions, instead of having to hop alts to ones I love a little less to play with friends who only play Fed.

    Little things, big things.... All QOL changes. Necessary? No. Nice? Heck Yah! :)

    Although I could completely see if the Neverwinter folks added Flying mounts, I expect they would add hazards to the sky. Freezing rain, the odd Lighting storm, bats, wyverns, swarms of pterodactyls, pantheons of pixies, murders of crows and even accidental but annoying flocks of seagulls to knock you off and send your toon screaming to the ground. ;)

    Maybe... This is after all Dungeons and Dragons and what does a person do as DM when your players insist on using Flying effects all the time? Muhah-Muhahahaha!
