Dismount aura for NPCs

judiodeplomojudiodeplomo Member, NW M9 Playtest Posts: 13 Arc User
I think certain useful NPCs (quest givers, vendors) should have a small aura around them that forcibly dismounts players. Mainly because it's a shame that we never see Merchant Prince Wakanga O'tamu in Port Nyanzaru. Rather we see a gigantic pile of mounts. A different pile of mounts can often be seen in place of Bruenor Battlehammer in Mantol Derith. These NPCs deserve to breathe too.

Also it would help with immersion in the story and would make it easier to click on important NPCs.

I'd rather not considering the amount of actual time spent there is less than a minute. Bad enough we get dismounted to drink a potion, flip a coin, etc.
I'm not looking for forgiveness, and I'm way past asking permission. Earth just lost her best defender, so we're here to fight. And if you want to stand in our way, we'll fight you too.

Oh no! You'd have to mount up again. And that takes almost a whole second. Unbearable.
And just so other people can see and enjoy the game world? Completely unnecessary.

Having to cut through the throng around the NPC you want to talk to? That takes almost no time and you get a close up with them so you get your personal one-on-one time with them.

That certainly depends on the NPC. I could probably mount and dismount 10-15 times in the time it takes to be allowed to click on Merchant Prince Wakanga O'tamu or Bruenor Battlehammer.

And again, immersion in the game world is a factor for a lot of people. NPCs are not just blobs that you click on for dailies. They are supposed to be characters in the story. To see a character covered entirely in mounts one moment, and then when you talk to them (10-15 seconds later because of said mounts) they are suddenly alone, is a bit immersion breaking.

I have a feeling that you are mixing two things together and nothing of it is about some mounts:
    1. you do not like that there is too many other people on the same map with the same goal as you (trust me, a ton of dismounted people is not better, it is still an unrealistic pile)
    2. there is a delay before you can click on NPC and if you rush it, you will try to communicate to the nearest player instead (again, getting rid of the mounts does not affect the delay anyhow)

From immersion point of view - why exactly do you think a person cannot talk to a mounted adventurer? I am really missing that one.

I don't have that problem. Guess I just get lucky hitting low-pop instances to talk to either.

BTW if you use /interact you can talk to just the NPC (will not bring up the player interaction menu). You can also alias or bind this :)

I personally don't have a huge problem with people swarming around quest givers. But I see how it is perhaps a little more silly if people are all riding various animals or magical creatures and clipping into each other.

Forcing people to dismount would tone down the silliness a bit, but at the cost of convenience. Is that worth it?

For me the answer is likely not. I feel like this game has enough of a time commitment to running around and doing stuff. Slowing me down when I am grabbing quests would just annoy me I think.

Especially if it were implemented like the tavern in Caer-Konig, which is incredibly frustrating to leave (since it's more than a dismount zone, but also applies some sort of timed debuff that prevents you from remounting until you spend a second or two outside the tavern).

    Just a personal preference :)

People can totally talk to mounted adventurers. But people cannot breathe inside a pile of overlapping horses.
So it's not that people are next to NPCs. It's that they are literally on them, overlapping.

Yes. It is personal preference. I understand that some people do see NPCs as grey blobs that give dailies. Those people will likely never understand my perspective.

I personally think the tiny delay of re-mounting is more than worth it. I always dismount at NPCs and don't find it the least bit annoying. The time it takes is less than a second.

Do you play alts or do you go through the game on only one character? That's also a preference too but If I'm running multiple alts through content and have a limited playtime I want to be able to do it as efficiently as possible. Sure maybe the first time through I'll take my time and such but after that- The story has been told and I just need to move through the motions again.
