for the long haul you're going to want leadership on all of them. alchemy has uses for persisting thru death potions and universal elements. you're probably going to want gem on all of the toons you plan on actually playing on regularly. there are better options than personalized jewelry but there is a point in levelling where they're gonna be the best thing you're going to find for awhile. right now you can craft bis clothes for them all thru the various professions but there are going to be cheaper and faster things available along the way that will have a gemmed slot for enchantments which is the really important thing. and I know you didn't ask this... but you want the lantern... lol
You are at the level where you will pick your first artifact - he's suggesting you go for the lantern, I would listen to him

also from everything i read, i keep hearing leadership is a waste of time now that you can't get ADs from it anymore
Lantern is referring to the Lantern of Revelation artifact from the Level20 artifact facts quest. Firesidecat put this because of the inevitable stream of level 20ish players which would ask "which artifacts".
To get back on topic, you still want Leadership because of the level 21-25 tasks which award RP, such as artifact stones, resonance stones, and Thaumaturge stones. These bags of RP will yield unbound stones, so you can use them for your SW, pass them to your alts, or simply sell the stones during 2x RP for a tidy profit.
However, if you're planning to become a masterwork crafter, it would be best if you leveled up all your professions, as some of the recipies will require other professions (ex: Masterwork Jewelcrafting needing Alchemy).

Reading the thoughts and ideas of other can get you good, valid, helpful advice.
It can also get you the ramblings of crybabies who are so blind to potential and angry over changes to their way of life that they will attempt to get everyone to believe what they believe, even when it is invalid.
Leadership comments often fall in the second category. True, you can no longer get AD from tasks. However, at almost every level above 7 you can create chests that provide potions, kits and refinement items. At level 21, you hit the jackpot. you will begin to be able to create chests of high level refinement items. Leadership takes a long time to level up, so I recommend that it be the third or fourth profession you level up. With 8 or 9 slots running, it will take less time, still much longer than any other profession, but less than trying to do it first. Leadership as the only profession can never unlock more than 7 slots, while every other profession can unlock 8.

too late on this, my jewlcrafter had already done this quest, and I chose the waters for healing, but for my SW I'll grab the lantern
speaking of my SW, anyone have suggestions on which professions for her, or should all my toons have all the same professions? in MMOs I usually have each toon concentrate on 1 specific profession
Unfortunately you will end up needing most of the professions on your characters since some of what they can make is bound to character. I personally would start with the ones that can make the armor kits or gear specific to your class since you will probably hit lv 25 in the profession around the same time as you get your good gear to reinforce. After that go for the ones that compliment what you are doing.

It is a good idea to diversify then switch to a specific profession, you will need 3 profession to level 20 to unlock all slots. You will want have the appropriate weapon and armor professions for your class. You can make shirt/pants with armor and the Elemental Evil artifact weapons with the weapon skill without mote hunting. Jewelry for personalized and it is one of the better crafting for the coffer skills. Weapon/armor can also craft, but gems are usually more needed. Then, start leadership as a 4th skill. The first three skills can all be leveled fairly quickly. You will want to run the 30min gathering tasks while you are playing to get as many as possible in. Then when taking a break or overnight run the 6,7,8 hour task to gather, or this is also a good time to refine gathered mats if you plan to craft something. I would go weapon, jewelry then armor as I would consider the ability to craft artfact weapons the most desirable. You may find jewelry or armor better for you.
I would also recommend alchemy as a fifth skill or have it on at least one character, no rush on that one and it is one of the best to do during 2Xprofessions if you take the time to gather the potions in advance. One problem most have is getting the rank 1 potions. This can be helped along by several events like Tymorra, Gift of the gods and others. Open the packages on a low level character and you will get low level potions. Many players tend to open these on their main, when opening on lower level makes the potions dropped valuable rather than a waste.
Side note: Waters is not a bad choice for artifact. Too many new players fall into the trap of thinking a shopkeeper is cool. It is, but that's about it. It isn't going to help your build much.

I think mastercraft might be confusing for a new player.. Mastercrafting is nothing to do with the basic getting to level 25 in professions. it's after that is accomplished. it's a very expensive undertaking and you must be part of a high level guild to participate in it. I wouldn't even think about this until you were WELL into level 70. and level 70 is really the start of the game. your item level is going to be the new levelling system once you hit level 70.
Jewelcrafting - good for upgrading some items & it's quick Armor profession (whichever is relevant for the class) - good for making shift & pants sometimes Alchemy - elemental aggregate & unified elements Leadership - making refinement. By the time I reach this profession I have all 9 slots open.
After that I'm usually too busy making refinement to start a new profession but I do have all the others on at least 1 character.

I would say just don't lvl it. You can have them all and once you get lvl 2 on one of them it moves higher up on the column so the one you don't want would be lowest on the list.

No love for the weapon professions now making Burning, Drowning etc artifact weapon sets? Maybe it seems more important to me because Burning is BIS for many Dc builds and Drowning for pretty much the rest.
I've maxed them on 1 character so I can make them, although everyone's currently churning out refinement for March 2nd

I know this is a little off topic, but you mentioned Mastercraft I have reached lvl 25 in artificing (needed for enchanted loam) I can't find anything about how to start the Mastercrafting task can I get a link maybe for it? Also where or how can I farm silex?

Mastercrafting:
1. Must be in a guild 2. Guildhall must be level 12 and have built Market 6. You can then get the quest and start. 3. Market 6 sells kits that show locations of crafting materials. Silex can be found using the Pirate's Skyhold maps.
