Hi, with all the last and upcoming changes at Neverwinter , how safe is buying an Owlbear companion? It costs about 6.5M at AH so that's 140€ in Zen (119€ if I wait until a Zen charge promotion), that's a big amount to invest if it could be toned down in a near future due to balance changes.
My intention is buying it for a SW which got a great synergy between Pillar of Power and Owlbear companion with the last changes.
I'll run Act tonight and see what it contributes to my DPS.
I run it on my HB Lock. I can't see it being 10% though for the simple fact that if I crit it does nothing and it's on encounters only. Sure Pillar doesn't crit and it ticks but I just don't think the output will be near that high.
Please keep in mind that is my assumption based on play, not testing.

Give me 12 hours from now and I'll report my findings!
I wouldn't spend that much on anything in NW at this point. Everything is subjected to wholesale destruction. They have set the precedents so I wouldn't touch it.

Spending a large amount of cash or in-game currency in any MMO is always a gamble, as MMOs are constantly changing and evolving. I highly recommend you do a lot of research before you think about spending that much AD on anything in the game. That being said - it is one of the more rare companions, so the price will probably always be high for that reason alone, even if the devs change things about how it works.
My opinions are my own. I do not work for PWE or Cryptic. - Forum Rules - Protector's Enclave Discord - I play on Xbox Any of my comments not posted in orange are based on my own personal opinion and not official. Clarification, by safe I do mean that there is no previsible "to be toned down" for the next 6 to 12 months, and that Pillar of Power with Owlbear companion is officially considered WAI.
As @kreatyve says, MMO are in constant evolution so long term changes are reasonable. I just want to know if it's safe for an acceptable long time period due to the big investment involved.
Thanks in advance.
PS: @reg1981 thanks for testing it. I'm (PvE only) HB SW too

they will not tell you that.. ever, on anything, the times they have, they have been wrong about anyways. Buy it or not, it will probably get a tone down like everything, they have ever sold anyways. The list is long and lengthy, some deserved more then others.
The issue isnt usually the concept of a tone down, its how they implement it. They usually make something too super powerful, unto worthless useage wise.
This goes for feats/powers/items ect.
I have told people a few times, if you buy early, you usualy get a good value, if you buy it late.. forget it, you will spend millions of AD on something or somethings.. to have it removed too soon for the value to get back to you.
This is a partial FBI run from a known warlock. Lot´s of log´s were posted in warlock section so far, no need to run tests i guess. I would say : Buy it , enjoy it for some time ( if that´s your intention ) but know the risk. The moment it get´s nerfed, no complains please.
Just looking at those numbers, I'd say it'll be getting adjusted at some point. Much like the Lostmauth set, that damage seems WAY out of the range they would want it to be doing.
So did the Lostmauth set. What happens if they patch it in a week? Or with the new zone? I wouldn't go out of my way to get one, especially since it will be showing up in the next Resurgence lockbox.
Ran an eToS with Act running and it contributed to 17% of my damage. TT was 20%, MF was about 15%, DT came in about 13%. Ran a VT and FOCUSED on getting the pillar down as soon as the CD was ready and it contributed to 29% of my damage. Now that said I had to adjust my play style so it would do as much damage as it could and my overall DPS suffered.
It holds a lot of power but IMO it's not nerf worthy for MY play style. For those testing and focusing on maximizing it's output, it maybe a problem.
Personally I put it on because pillar of power was weak but necessary since they broke my old HB-Fury build. If WB and HG didn't consume TT I'd still be running my old build...

I think I paid 1-2 million for a polar bear cub, which has the same drop chance from lockboxes. It provides a nice but by no means overpowered benefit to my cleric. The current very high price for the owlbear cub is exactly because of this synergy.
You will find Fangbreaker Island "looking for group" requests demanding SW's as DPS. My 3.5K item level CW was recently turned down for a party simply because he's not a SW. That's not a once-off event, but a "thing." That's a good indication that this particular SW combination is working better than it should. Chances are, it will eventually be rebalanced. Since they recently worked on the SW it is possible that it might go unchanged for a while but it is impossible to know for sure.
If 6.5 million isn't a lot of cash to you and you want to be on the top of the DPS heap for a while, join the other SWs that decided to go ahead with the purchase. Know that it will almost certainly be overpowered for a limited, unknown amount of time.
You certainly don't need that pet to be competitive. If you're not already BIS in other things the money might be better spent on items like enchantments that have had stable powers for some time.
Saw a GF using this during Dragonflight. Now we are only talking about a 5 min battle, but I saw the increase was only 2-3% DPS per ACT. I almost felt sorry for him for the purchase.
Ya I was thinking about this more and with a little modification of play style I can meet half way and it's pretty potent. I've not pushed into fangbreaker yet, I've heard queuing is frustrating for many though.
If it's released in a new lockbox it'll probably be nerfed at some point unless they leave legacy ones in game like the mounts. If they dry up they'll become extinct as players drop.
Either way, don't waste the AD unless you HAVE to have it If it comes out in another box it may get nerfed and cheaper!

The simple answer is it is never safe. Even if they say they don't have plan to change it, it does not mean it will not be changed. They are not exactly lying neither (although in some occasions, IMO, they were). Based on the history, nothing is safe. The lol set was once be told by dev that it was the way it supposed to be (although many players pointed out it could not be). I am not saying the decision of nerfing lol set is right or wrong. I am trying to point out anything can be changed regardless what the dev said.

I recently bought the owlbear. Considered buying it with just zen but ended up farming about half of the ad and buying the rest with zen, too much money too spend on an item in a game if you ask me.

On one side, people were complaining about the LOL set from the get-go and it took 1.5 years(!) to get nerfed. Glad to have enjoyed it most of that time. On the other side, it can get nerfed even 1.5 years down the road. Nothing is safe.
Everything you ever liked, everything you ever saved for... expect the nerf hammer and you won't be surprised.

I would rather go ViP and collect the daily lockbox keys, then sell everything i get from the lockboxes with those keys, and use the AD to buy the item i want from the market... unless i get it as drop from a lockbox.
This will probably take a lot more time then just buying it directly, but at least i'm getting more then just one single item for one single character.
