Agreed. Needs more ergonomic fishing mechanic, higher fish catch rate, lower fish goal, higher fishing spot spawn rate, less god-damn crabs.
I have no objection to a difficult quest. But fishing is just mind numbing. Not fun. Involves no skill. Not augmented or mitigated by any aspect of our characters or gear. Adds nothing to the narrrative of the story or develops our ingame experience.
Try switching to an empty instance. That eases the pain a bit. But this quest brings our enjoyment of Lonelywood to a screeching halt.
I am Took.
"Full plate and packing steel" in NW since 2013.
Three runs and I've never had an issue with the fishing quest. Every cast isn't guaranteed a fish, no big deal. Last time did it, I got 2 nothing's and 1 boot. Otherwise, I got a fish. Usually a candlefish, which was annoying since they're worth fewer points, but otherwise it worked fine.
My thought here, though, is.... You want me to go fishing? I've saved the world more than once, I've destroyed massively powerful liches, dragons, gods.... And you want me to go fishing for you?
Each spot will only give you one fish, even if it's still clickable after you got it, so move on to a fresh one, let the old one rest for a minute or so, then you can fish again in it. It's rather silly but that way you get fishes 100% of the time.

It's a call back to the RA Salvatore novels. One of his major characters, Regis, always enjoyed fishing in Lonelywood, from the banks of Maer Dualdon. It would've been a big miss to include Lonelywood in the game, and not have some sort of fishing.
For those not more familiar with the lore, I would recommend picking up and reading through RA Salvatore's Icewind Dale trilogy. The devs did a really good job of recreating some of those locals so far in IWD.

Maybe it's in the lore, but this doesn't fit in this game. This is a fast-paced action game, of course, people are going to be annoyed by such things.

omg this is the worst thing I have ever done in a game . . . . . ever
Ive just spent 20 mins on this HAMSTER daily
It makes baby jesus cry
for the love of god, banish the god awful piece of **** experience to the nine hells
We hates it my precious
Whichever one of you that thought of this and inflicted this upon us, well . . . . .
and @ironzerg79 - fair enough if it didn't take 20mins to complete. It is sooooooooo booooooooring
I feel like glassing myself in the face atm

At least you can actually finish the fishing quest. I can't believe there's not more comment across the boards about the dreadful Recruit Training quest.

haven't done that one yet, geez 9 old boots mixed in with whatever that fish is that gives 5 points, one after the other - horrible, just horrible

This is a game not a series of novels. What works in a book does not necessarily translate to another medium. Reading some fishing scenes in a book (that should include character development) is not even in the same realm as forcing players to grind out a fishing quest on a daily basis.

FYI, you can also just skip it if you want. The daily "Defending the Dale" requires a mix of either 1 or 2 quests from Bryn Shandar and then 1 or 2 quests from Lonelywood, for a total of three quests. Quests from the previous days also count, so there's a lot of flexibility in what you need to do to advance the campaign.
If you don't like fishing? Just skip it...For those that have been "lucky" enough to be able to complete it easily, congrats on the low-hanging fruit.

This should probably be emphasized. Pick up quests (except maybe ones you hate enough to never ever want to run again). Do the ones with objectives that stack nicely, but only turn in the minimum you need to. Since you don't get anything particularly useful for doing more dailies than needed, there's no harm in banking some. Watch in particular for any quest that is just a kill total or picking up drops, since these will auto-complete while you do other tasks.
My DC has half the hides she needs from wolves killed while picking herbs, but didn't finish that one yet because it wasn't necessary.
The fishing quest and the trainee escort will be ok once fixed.

And just to be clear, I'm not saying that the broken aspects shouldn't be fixed...I'm just point out that, even if it's fixed, it's likely a quest people are going to hate doing, so you don't have to.
Even fixed, the only time I'm going to actually finish the Trainee quest is if I can tow her along with me while I do some of the other hunting quests that I can complete faster.
But then again, someone who's not a big DPS class might find it easier to complete the collection quests versus the combat.
Either way, I think it was actually a great design choice on Cryptic's part, assuming it was actually intentional to allow players to only do the 3 quests out of six that they preferred each day (or more if they kept older ones in their quest log).

This doesn't happen until you have a certain amount of rep. Initially in Lonelywood you're forced to do three quests and it will include fishing depending on the quests that NPCs have for each day.
Gotta break out my Epic rod from the Bank. The simple rod is fun, but it usually takes me less than 30 min. to finish.
As long as your Epic Rod is in the bank area of the character wanting to use it, it will be recognised and work without the need to move it into a bag in your main inventory space. So you can simply discard the simple rod to leave room for all of the varieties of fish

Weirdly, if you have a blue fishing rod, it seems like you might as well be using the basic one for these quests. Not impressed about that revelation. It's never been important that I fully upgrade to an epic fishing pole on all of my alts, considering that it's quite fiddly to collect everything needed for it. So some are purple, some are green or blue, and a few don't even have one. But they all need to at least get through the introductory fishing quest in Lonelywood eventually.
Being able to finish the quest after catching just 5-6 fish is fine and quite feasible with the epic pole, and you don't feel the bugs nearly as badly, but when you need to catch at least 20 fish to make up the points, and you can only get a fish 1 in 3 casts at best, assuming nobody is leaving a bunch of emptied 2-cast holes around (this is when you change instances)... it's really grim. And then... A BOOT. Swell. 60+ interacts to finish one quest, even with a solid understanding of how to cope with the bugged mechanics... it does feel more than just a wee bit torturous. It won't be so awful when every cast produces something.
You can kind of animation-cancel the null casts to speed things up a little. The interact bar finishes before the animation fully plays.
Another complaint, the small crabs are worth 0 xp. If you're going to make me fight them, I want it to count towards my overflow levels, kthx.
Rng is weird for that one.. Did 2 times so far as Lonelywood intro. First time - 10 boots, lots of misses, 20 min wasted. 2nd time - no boots, no misses, 7 min... Common.

Thx guys this has really help me... Blue Rod , instance with low population, only do the first cast and moved on to the next one and when finished with all move to another low populated instance. Did it in around 5 mins top..
geez, less than 5 mins to get 200 points isnt that hard to get, what is the complaining about? if you got purple grade fishing rod from winter festival, that helps speed up. if you got a beginner rod, that could be a problem why it fails on the pulls.
Perhaps an occasional soaked purse or other valuable enchant/RP (Rank 7 or higher perhaps?) holding item would provide an added incentive for players to spend the time fishing? @panderus

got another fishing assignment, this time is terrible, i beleived it got ninja nerfed, getting 1 fish per hole and last 2 pulls are empty, and a fish worth 5-10 pts instead of 25-50 pts, plus more crabs arrgoes. sick of other thieves stealing the hole when i am defending.
also, other saturday task in lonelywood are not shareable, nodes are cuththroat forcing me to look for other herbs or switch zones if none of them has bubble effects.
last week was easy run, now it is pure frustrations and node thieves.
