CW; need build help BADLY

Alright, so I'm REALLY new to this game, but I've been playing for... a week or two, now? I've got a TR at level 47ish, but the class that appeals to me most is the Control Wizard (mainly for the floaty ball though, gonna admit right now) but I must be doing something very wrong, because even at level 20 with a 2000 power boost from Champions of the North pack's spider mount, AND an Augment stone, I'm still doing almost nil in damage, unless what's facing me is a weak trash mob.

I keep hearing how CW's are really powerful and how people who play them end up doing the most damage, but I end up dying more often than not because when faced with anything more powerful than a weak minion it's my companion who's doing the damage, and meanwhile I feel like I'm doing little more than flinging daisies at it, regardless of what move I use.
So I'd like to know exactly how this wet noodle of a class is being touted as doing more damage than anyone else...?

mmominds.com is a good place to start. Also there are a couple of guides in the PC section by thefabricant and ironzerg you might want to check out.

If your armor pen is low, though, it doesn't matter how much damage you're packing because the enemy DR is ignoring a lot of it. A CW draws a lot of its power from encounter use, so recovery is also something good to invest in to cut down your recharge time.
