I remember reading somewhere that you can use the PlayStation app on your phone to use chat? I was wondering if that's possible and if so, how? Thanks!
Yes, you can use the second screen function on the PS4 app to type into your chat box. I use my phone for that purpose when I can be bothered to fire up the app.

Apparently you can buy chatpads that are a mini keyboard that attaches to the bottom of the DS4 controller. About $30 USD
I got one from Amazon that was rated fairly high, but you have to do a bit of a finger dance before you can even type with one. I found it was just a hassle. I learned that the second screen aspect of the app would work as a keyboard, tried it out, and found it was miles easier.
Once you get the app downloaded follow the instructions (I just googled them) to get your phone to show up under bluetooth devices, and fire the app up. Get yourself to the keyboard screen in second screen and every time you would type after hitting square you can do so on your device. I keep my iphone plugged into the charger and set the screen so as not to timeout, and it is ready whenever I need it. Just remember to turn your screen timeout back on when you're done.
I just realized I could probably use voice type to make it even easier, but haven't tried it.
This game does not recognize a keyboard an mouse like final fantasy does when you plug them into your ps4 to play. Controller is fine but its very limiting and takes away from the experience they intend for you to have. I feel reluctant to invest if they're unwilling to meet me that much. I know many others who they about this.
Or you could just, you know, plug in a normal freakin keyboard. Lmfao.
I suspect the typical PS4 player is gaming in a setting that does not easily allow for a full sized keyboard. Even if it was blue tooth so that you didn't have to have a cord strung halfway across the room, that is significantly more space than is often available. Consoles are still primarily used in shared living areas, like a living room or den, so there is no easy or comfortable place to put a keyboard, which is why some people like to use the ones that attach to controllers.
That said, either way you are using three buttons just to start typing with either keyboard, where as the app only requires one. It's just easier for me.

I haven't tried it, but I have read several things posted by people who have used a regular keyboard who have said it does indeed work. You still have to hit L1+down pad+square to allow you to type, but it does apparently work.

this game, and the experience they intend for you to have, was basically tailor made for Controllers, even back in 2013 when it launched on PC. I'm not sure where this is "limiting" or where lack of keyboard/mouse takes away from this. It's not like you have 30 skills to rotate through. You have 9. when I played on PC back then, all I could think of was "this is a console game, when is it coming out for consoles?"
the only thing this game needs a keyboard for is typing. and any regular keyboard works flawlessly for that purpose.
Hell, I didn't even miss Keyboard/Mouse on FFXIV, and THAT game was designed for it. SE's controller set up worked wonderfully, and I can't imagine myself playing my tank in that game with KB/M.
it sounds like you, and the many others that you know, just really want to play on a PC.

Personally, I have both a regular wireless keyboard and a chatpad. both work fine, but with the chatpad, I don't have to set my controller down.
I do agree though, that it should not take 3 button presses to get to the point where you can start typing. you should just be able to hit enter and go.
Chatting with either keyboard is far from elegant on this game and is just plain clunky. My PS4 sits side by side my desktop with a dedicated large screen TV. I have a secondary keyboard plugged in for chatting. After hooking up the keyboard; you have to select chat; enter the secondary button selections just to get to the chat entry line; and then you can start typing but then you have to go back to the pad to transmit your message (R2). Chat should default to text entry not to an options window and the keyboard return key should send it.

The controller chat is just so slow!
