So Just how bad is the Combat tree?

aettthornaettthorn Member Posts: 73 Arc User
So as I work on my main, I thought that I'd create a Ranger as a side project. I like to do things a bit differently, and don't mind being a bit sub-par if it means that I'm still having fun. That said, I don't want to be completely unplayable, either.

So just how bad is a Combat-spec'd Ranger going to be? I was thinking of trying to make a melee ranger, maybe open up with a few ranged attacks, and then move into melee to finish them off. The stacking deflection looks like it could work, but all I hear are bad things about this tree. I'm not going to build it to be the best damage that I could possibly do, but I would like to be able to hold my own when solo and/or doing campaign stuff.

So just how bad is this tree really?

Look, you're never gonna top the damage charts as Combat but I guarantee you it will be the most fun you've had in this game. I have a SW Archer and a PF Combat HR (which will be changing back to SW next weekend) and I enjoy playing the latter far more than the former. More engaging and survivable. However, I don't play out-and-out Combat, even though all my points are stuck in the Combat feat tree. I use both versions of Rain of Arrows/Swords, Fox Shift/Cunning and Cordon or Arrows/Plant Growth and I continually cycle through my encounters.

You will more than hold your own in solo play. The only place my Combat HR has died in Mod 6 are dungeons - this includes lvling from 60-70. Lifesteal feats are awesome and means you'll likely never drop below 50% during solo play.

Awesome! Thanks for the help. Just didn't want to make something I was going to regret.

It's not as bad as things were in Mod 2 pve-wise where Combat was truly underwhelming. I remember farming for the MH and OH in MC and my damage was worlds apart from the rest of the dps classes. The difference is still large compared to GWF or CW-wielding Lostmeal sets, but not as great as it was back then. You do need to go SW, though, for the spinning blades of death that is Clear the Ground.

Just out of curiosity, which dailies are you guys using for this? None of them seem to be too focused on melee range.

Dailies are always tough because they are mostly bad for damage purposes. We have nothing like CW or TR dailies. I always slot Forest Ghost for the extra damage when fighting a pack of mobs, while the other slot is filled by Slasher's Mark, which is a lovely gap-closer. However, I will probably select Seismic Shot or possibly Disruptive Shot when I respec back to Stormwarden.
